Kandal provincial administration and a Chinese firm have discussed the construction project of a new lightweight railway connecting the Techo International Airport in Kandal province with Phnom Penh capital.

The discussion took place in a meeting between H.E. Kong Sophorn, Governor of Kandal province, and a delegation from China Metro in Kandal province on Aug. 22.

This is maximally designed to take the most amount of time getting to and leaving the airport.

Single large road sharing everything? Epic traffic snarls. Restricted access for only the chosen tuk tuks.

Who designed this?

There is one small road that connects to NR2 directly and the new main 4 lane road that connects to HE Boulevard from where you can take either NR2 or HE Blvd to the city, or the new Ring Road 3 if going western or northern part of city or connecting to Sihanoukville Expressway (and which in future connects to NR6 & Vietnam Expressway and eventually all the way to future Siem Reap Expressway). Also there is the study ongoing if they have some sort train connection or toll expressway all the way to city (elevated along HE Blvd, Bangkok style) or even both.

IMO if they are wise they would connect the all the future high speed rails to the airport, and then have one express train that connects to city using the same rails.

A rail line , no matter if it is hi-speed or not, will not decongest the cities streets going to the airport.. The new airport is like a mini city and need everything from sand/cement and building supplies for maintenance to everything that is sold in the duty free shops and beyond, and none of that will get to the airport by rail. Passenger traffic on the rail line is only a small percentage of that business that needs to get to the airport.

I have traveled most Monday mornings from Takhmau to PP for the last 10 years and I can tell you it has become just one big traffic jam and will get worse when the new airport starts to operate.

I don't live all the way to Takhmau but along HE Bldv and I use the road daily either to go to city or south to Kampot/Kep and there's hardly any big traffic jams in recent months except at the intersection of HE Blvd and Monivong where they are building the new multilevel roundabout and only few lanes are in use. That new intersection should take care of the bottle neck what it has been in past.

That is the reason there is the new ring road so trucks can use it and industry can move along it. There's plenty of new warehouses build along it already and more will be built in future. And within next 10 years there will be the new ring road 4 too.

It'll be fine when the new spaghetti junction gets finished on the HSB/271/Monivong junction.

So no Chinese operator. Cambodia Airports has been selected as the operator of the Techo Takhmao International Airport. Cambodia Airports currently operates Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville airports.
