$13.M e-bike plant planned for SEZ in Svay Rieng
Thou Vireak | Publication date 24 June 2021 | 21:03 ICT
Leisger (Cambodia) Co Ltd plans to build a plant to manufacture electric bicycles, batteries and other components, in a special economic zone (SEZ) of the southeastern province of Svay Rieng.

The Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) on June 23 said it had approved a final registration certificate for Leisger Cambodia’s $13.9 million venture in “Sin Bavet Special Economic Zone”, and is expected to create 251 jobs.

Provincial deputy governor Ros Pharith said he welcomes all investment projects in the province, which he pointed out boasts notable trade potential as it borders Vietnam.

“We have not received this information yet, but we believe this investment will create more jobs for the people,” he said, ascribing this “achievement” as an “effort of the senior government leadership to attract foreign investors to Cambodia”.

“We will facilitate the provision of public services to them to serve the factory project,” Pharith said.

Hong Vanak, director of International Economics at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, previously noted that free trade agreements (FTA) with China and South Korea, as well as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement, will contribute to reeling in investment to the Kingdom.

“We will have more inflows of investors into Cambodia in the future,” he said.

The Kingdom exported $527.8 million worth of bicycles and spare parts last year, up by 27.78 per cent from 2019’s $412.49 million, and imported $8.38 million from Japan, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, the US and Thailand, down by 19.33 per cent year-on-year, according to Ministry of Commerce data.

While no figures were available for the number of bicycles exported in 2020, online trade publication Bike Europe reported that the Kingdom shipped out more than 1.42 million bicycles in 2017, up by nine per cent from 1.26 million in the previous year.

According to Bike Europe, Cambodia has become the leading supplier of bicycles to the EU since 2017, overtaking Taiwan, which held the position for more than two decades.

Cambodia is ASEAN’s largest exporter of bicycles to the EU – Denmark and Sweden are notable buyers
September 11, 2021 - by Gregers Møller

Cambodia has since 2017 become ASEAN’s leading supplier of bicycles to the EU, according to Bike Europe and over the past eight months, the country exported 1.86 million bicycles into the international market, Phnom Penh reports.

According to Ministry spokesman Seang Thay, 50 countries globally import bicycles from Cambodia and the Nordic countries of Denmark and Sweden are amongst countries highlighted as notable buyers. Other countries classified as notable buyers include the US, Germany, Belgium, the UK, Australia, Austria, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic.

Before 2017, Taiwan held the position as the leading supplier of bicycles to the EU but the Cambodian bicycle export market has remained in positive territory in recent years, ascribing the current upswing to a combination of factors, Ministry spokesman Seang Thay said.

Cambodia exported last year $527.08 million worth of bicycles, marking a 27.78 percent year-on-year surge, emerging as ASEAN’s largest exporter and world number-five, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

So far this year, from January to August 2021, the export of bicycles from Cambodia has accounted for $416.85 million, as reported by the Ministry and the number represents a jump of $82.17 million or 24.55 percent from the $334.67 million recorded from the same period last year, the ministry noted.

Cambodia earns over 500 mln USD from bicycle export
Cambodian bicycle manufacturers earned 514 million USD from exports in January-October, the Khmer Times quoted the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce as saying on December 27.

Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodian bicycle manufacturers earned 514 million USD from exports in January-October, the Khmer Times quoted the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce as saying on December 27.

During the year-end meeting on December 23, Cambodian Minister of Commerce Pan Sorasak said despite disruptions made by the COVID-19 pandemic, the country’s strong export of bicycles has remained this year.

Its major markets including the US, Germany, UK, Japan, China, ASEAN, Belgium, Holland, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Australia, Czech Republic, Italy, Columbia, the Republic of Korea, Spain, Slovenia, and Canada.

The bicycles are assembled only in the special economic zones located in Bavet city, Svay Rieng province, which shares a border with Vietnam.

They are exported under free trade agreements, the Generalised System of Preferences and Most-Favoured Nation (MFN) schemes, and other trade deals.

Last year, bicycle exports brought 527 million to Cambodia, a 27.7 percent increase compared to that in a year before.

So does Cambodia just assemble them, as is quoted?
And on that subject if mass produced bicycle frames are just welded by robots on a production line why can’t Cambodia do that in house?

Robotic production lines require a stable, smooth source or constant power to properly function. Voltage spikes, brown outs, and extended blackouts play havoc with robot chips.

People can assemble bicycle frames without even any electrical power.

Robots also require technical skills for maintenance and programming that is still in short supply.

Cambodia now EU’s largest bicycle exporter
Tuesday, 30 August 2022 Mark Sutton
[excerpts]
Cambodia’s Office of the Council of Ministers has delivered an update on export trade, revealing $505 million worth of bicycle goods to have been shipped in H1, 2022.

Heng Sokkung, Secretary of State and spokesman for the ministry said in a press conference “Cambodia is the world’s fifth largest exporter in the bicycle industry and the number one exporter to the European Union.”

The Southeast Asian country has played its part in filling a void left by a decline in Chinese exports, affected by anti-dumping duties, among other headwinds. These challenges, paired with rising labour costs and shipping issues have prompted waves of investment both in the rest of Asia, but also in Europe, drastically changing the picture of where Europe sources its bicycle goods, in particular electric bikes.

Aside from the EU and UK, other substantial importers of Cambodia bicycle goods include the United States, China, Australia and Canada.

Cambodia Exports Bicycles Worth US$966 Million in 2022
AKP Phnom Penh, January 31, 2023 --
Cambodian exported US$966 million worth of bicycles to international markets in 2022, up 48 percent compared to a year before, the Ministry of Commerce’s report showed on Monday.

The ministry stated that the bicycles had been shipped to more than 50 countries and regions including the European Union, Britain, the United States, Canada, Japan and China.

Cambodia is the top player in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in terms of bicycle export, it underlined.

The Kingdom became the largest bicycle supplier for the EU market since 2017, overtaking China’s Taiwan, which had held the number one spot for two decades.

Currently, five bicycle factories are operating in Cambodia, all located in special economic zones in Bavet city of southeastern Svay Rieng province.

Bicycle becomes one of the main non-garment products, whose export has been on significant surge, said H.E. Heng Sokkung, Secretary of State and Spokesperson at the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation.

The increases in bicycle export reflects the diversification in the industry sector, from labour-intensive to skilled labour manufacturing, stressed the spokesperson.
