“We, Women, Can Also Become Leaders Representing Our Country”

Chhoun Chhiv Ing, a second year student at Paragon International University shares her thoughts on the challenges of undertaking a university degree typically dominated by male students. As a young sophomore student, Chhiv Ing met with Ky Chamna of Cambodianess to discuss her perspective on the study on International Relations as a Cambodian woman.

Ky Chamna: What motivates you study International Relations?

Chhoun Chhiv Ing: I think I’m motivated to choose IR over math-related majors because of a longstanding desire to represent Cambodian on the international stage, I would very much like to bring myself into the field of politics. So far, I’ve really enjoyed learning about current affairs on a global scale, as well as the history that led to our current situation, but really I want to see Cambodia forge stronger relations with other countries in the world.

Ky Chamna: You’ve been interested in IR and global politics since childhood, but how did this desire come about? Was there anyone in particular who inspired you to go down this path?

Chhoun Chhiv Ing: Realistically, I’ve nurtured my interest in this subject by myself, although the potential career prospects such as becoming a diplomat or ambassador seemed quite appealing. After my graduation from high school, my uncle offered me some guidance on this subject which also helped.

Ky Chamna: According to your high school grades, in terms of dealing with numbers, you’re quite good. Why did you opt for a social science over a math-related subject?

Chhoun Chhiv Ing: Actually, I believe that not all people who are good at math are willing to study engineering or other math-related majors. Not all students who are doing well in math actually like math.

We just study hard because we don’t want to have bad grades or fail in high school. I’m not that really good at math either, I’m just in a position which allows me to survive my studies—including math—without too many obstacles. In terms of other subjects such as history and literature, my ability ranges within the medium level as well I guess, so, it is not really a problem for me to choose IR.

Ky Chamna: Currently, there are not that many women who study IR in Cambodia, why do you think this is and are things changing?

Chhoun Chhiv Ing: Yes, I agree with the statement that not many women want to study IR and instead they are more attracted to other majors such as accountancy, but in my opinion, the relationship between IR and politics might be something that men typically find more interesting than women.

Not many women feel they belong in politics, as it’s a field that focuses on complicated relations between states, so I’m always so proud of women who involve themselves in politics. To make myself clear, I still value all majors in the universities as they’re all are useful in different ways, no matter what the major is, what’s important is that we choose it by following our heart and we are sure that it is our goal.

SHE Investments to support women entrepreneurs on digital literacy skills

SHE Investments, a social enterprise to support women micro-small entrepreneurs, has joined as the Cambodian partner for Youth Business International’s rapid response recovery Programme, funded by Google.Org, to support women entrepreneurs to build digital literacy skills to enable them to recover and rebuild from the Covid-19 crisis.

The program, led by Youth Business International (YBI) and funded by Google.org, Google’s philanthropic arm, will support underserved micro, small and medium businesses to respond to the COVID-19 crisis.

SHE Investments has been confirmed as YBI’s delivery partner for Cambodia, and over the next five months, will work with a project team to develop and deliver digital literacy training and support for Khmer women entrepreneurs struggling in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.

“Businesses now need to focus on recovering and rebuilding from this initial economic shock”, says Celia Boyd, co-founder and Managing Director of SHE Investments—Cambodia’s first and only business incubator and accelerator for women that is delivered in Khmer language, by Khmer women.

Book on inspirational women business leaders published
Image
A new book that chronicles the digital world journey of women business leaders in Cambodia and several other countries in Southeast Asia has recently been published by the Cambodia chapter of Woomentum, the French Embassy and other partners.

The publication of “The Women Lead in the Digital Economy “was held at the French Embassy in Phnom Penh.

The 97-page book tells the story of 20 Cambodian businesswomen and three others from Malaysia, Myanmar and Singapore, and how they cope in increasingly digital economies.

In the last few years, a big chunk of Southeast Asia has undergone a massive transformation. Traditional economies have turned digital, with women leading the way in many instances.

The book particularly highlights how technology was successfully integrated into women’s businesses.

These women were asked 10 questions related to their educational background, leadership experience, what technological innovations they used to improve their products and services, among others.

In the book, these women leaders, who are into handicraft, technology, rice, tourism, education and shampoo production, also shared how they managed people and businesses from small to big projects.

Phauk PauvRachana, vice-president of Woomentum, said this book plus their previous one provide a golden opportunity for women to shine with their stories and success, not only in their own country, but also globally.

“With the book, we want to tell the world that Cambodian women, as well as women in the region, are brave and can manage businesses like their male counterparts,” she stressed.

Tech competition set to empower Cambodian women in the sector
Image
As women continue to break boundaries in their accomplishments globally, their Cambodian counterparts are also striving to achieve the same – with strong female figureheads and business owners becoming more and more common.

Despite this, there remains a distinct lack of female presence in the technology sector.

Step in “She Loves Tech”, the world’s largest start-up competition, which aims to get women involved in the male-dominated sector by creating opportunities for them.

She Loves Tech was founded in 2015 with the aim to encourage women to stand up and use their potential in the field of technology. Today, it is a global platform committed to building entrepreneurship and innovation which creates opportunities for women.

The competition, coming to Cambodia for the first time this year, has been co-organised by She Loves Tech and Raintree, in partnership with the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications, Ministry of Finance, Khmer Enterprise and Global Shapers Phnom Penh Hub.

Co-founder of She Loves Tech, Virginia Tan, said: “Without women, we are unable to solve the world’s greatest challenges. Women represent a new generation of innovation.”

Leanne Robers, also a co-founder of the tech initiative, added: “Empowering women in technology will change the way we live and work. Our competition is one of the best ways to springboard that change.”

According to a global UNESCO study in 2017 on girls and women’s education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), only 30 percent of female students in higher education chose to pursue STEM-related fields. It also stated that female enrolment in Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) was the lowest, accounting for only three percent of applicants.

Financial technology sector promotes strong female leadership
As Cambodia’s financial technology sector continues to experience rapid growth, Khmer Times reporter Harrison White sat down with TrueMoney’s Chief Strategy Officer Frandara (Dara) Khuon to discuss the importance of female participation and leadership
Image
KT: Dara, can you please describe your journey to becoming a leading woman within Cambodia’s financial technology sector?

Frandara: I started my career in the local hotel industry working in sales and marketing during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Then, in 2005, when the newly-formed Australian and Cambodian bank ANZ Royal was created I was approached to work as a merchant sales manager. From there I was selected to travel to both Australia and the Philippines to learn many different aspects of the banking sector.

Returning to Cambodia I was able to use this experience to assist many local customers who had never used a formal banking system before and introduce them to financial services such as deposit accounts, ATMs and digital transactions.

After six years I decided to shift away from traditional banking and into the digital sector with one of my major visions being to drive financial inclusion to improve the life of Cambodia’s many unbanked population.

While things have somewhat changed now, during those early years I was also having to navigate through a predominantly male environment and using my independent style I have been able to gain momentum within the organisation to achieve the position I have today.

KT: Why is it important that there is strong female participation working in the local financial technology sector?

Frandara: In the context of Cambodia, women have a very strong role in looking after the family and its finances. From this, a financial organisation must have a strong number of women within its workforce who understand this market, as well as providing their own life experiences for the benefit of the company.

In addition, I also believe that women have a very strong eye for detail and are, more often, more disciplined then men in day-to-day tasks at work.

For example, when I run an event or workshop and I give this task to one of my female staff I can be assured that every detail will be well thought out. However, if I was to give this task to one of my male staff members most often they will not think about the small details.

That said, overall high levels of female participation mean the organisation can provide a true gender balance in its workforce which allows both genders to truly complement each other. In the end, this ability to complement each other is the most important part of female participation.

KT: What are some of the barriers that women have or continue to face when entering the industry and how can the sector help to overcome this?

Frandara: As I previously mentioned, women have and are still expected in Cambodia to look after the family and household duties and these responsibilities have not really changed despite women also now having to enter the workforce and help with the family income. So, in turn, many women can struggle with the large burden of full-time work, as well as being a mother, wife and head of a household.

In response, I believe the industry can best support young women through promoting strong female role models that can show the next generation that it is possible to achieve corporate success and have a sustainable and fulfilling family life too.

To prove this, one of the industry’s most-respected role models is the National Bank of Cambodia’s Director-General Chea Serey. She is an example of a woman who has been able to achieve tremendous change to the central bank’s digital banking agenda, as well as to diversify herself through having a strong family and hobbies such as being an accomplished artist.

French Embassy hosts leadership workshop to empower women

Seventeen Cambodian businesswomen, NGO and civil society organisation representatives attended the Women’s Leadership Workshop yesterday, which aims to strengthen their capacity within management roles.

The workshop, which was hosted at the French Embassy by French Ambassador Eva Nguyen Binh and BRED Bank Cambodia, was organised by the SHINE Better Business Academy.

The sessions are designed to develop essential soft-skills that are critical to being successful businesswomen or managers in Cambodia.

Women’s leadership is a focus for the French Embassy, as part of France’s international strategy on supporting gender equality and strengthening links with the private sector.

The strategy encourages improved access to positions of responsibility for women while breaking down stereotypes of women in business and managerial positions.

Started in 2019, the SHINE initiative, supported by BRED Bank Cambodia, intends to provide more opportunities to women in business by giving them access to high-level learning opportunities, expert advice, practical tools and networks to help their businesses thrive.

The Power of Education Can Prove Women Can Do What Men Do!
Cambodianess 04/12/2020 11:46 AM

“Education is indispensable for everyone regardless of gender and race. Without education, I would not be able to imagine how my life would be,” says Ms. ROS Chheangsene, Graphic Designer at KOUPREY Digital.
Image
In Cambodia, gender disparity in education remains a burning issue and development challenge due to the low levels of literacy and large gaps of dropout, in which women are particularly more disadvantaged than men in older age groups. However, there has been an improvement in gender parity in education in younger age groups in the last few years, according to the Cambodia Gender Assessment of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs.

Born in an ordinary family in Phnom Penh, Ros Chheangsene, 27, is one of the lucky women, who could pursue a higher education and have a chance to achieve her dream in Graphic Design while in Cambodia a number of girls, who are living in rural areas, especially those who are from ethnic minorities, are generally more disadvantaged than others.

Graduating in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in Visual Communications Design under the scholarship of Royal University of Fine Arts, she is currently working as a Graphic Designer at KOUPREY Digital, a digital marketing agency that provides services in digital marketing strategies and innovative solutions.

Here, she shares her graphic design venture and how she has overcome barriers to achieve her dream:
