If you've got the hot girls, you're going to make money. One thing I've noticed in PP, PTY, & BKK is that they tend to migrate. The secret to the biz is to keep them from doing that. The shelves must be well stocked. The hottest bar in town can be dead as a fart 6 months later.

$0 from me. When I started running my bar I had budgeted for monthly payments to officials. To my surprise, this hasn't happened and the police, songkat, and municipal guys have been fairly helpful. Sure I've handed out tips for specific things (eg $3 so I could trim the big tree blocking our outside sign), and I give out cases of beer at Khmer new year etc but no regular 'backhanders'.

there's an endless supply of old fat suckers who are willing to pay crazy amounts of money just to smell young pussy in a shitty bar.

it's so sad but you know what, they fully deserve to be ripped off by these girls and their bar owners.

She was counting out a serious wedge of $100 bills from her bulging purse and said it was rent time and mentioned the figure involved, I was staggered. I'd been in there a few times and it was clear their attempt at revamping this extremely large and reasonably done up joint was failing miserably. She owns a couple of others I believe which are successful and I guess they must subsidise this one. I note that it was mentioned as one that was up for sale rather unsurprisingly.
This sounds like Zanzi pub on St. 110. I don't think any double wide shophouse bar does less business than Zanzi pub.

So how do some of the really quiet ones on, say, St 110 survive?

They never seem to have more that one or two customers at any time of night.

Some of them have cheap rents from leases set up before rents went sky high. They also cut down on staff, switch off the aircon and cut some lights when there are no customers. Plus they use really cheap spirits for ladydrinks (and sometimes customer drinks!). A couple of the owners say they aim to just break even during the quiet season and then make money as things pick up in November.

Thanks Jah Steu.

I see some of the things you mention for sure. I still wonder how some of them could make dough in the high season though but I suppose if they own the building or the rent is dirt cheap perhaps it's possible.

For those who don't know: the moto is the bar owner's, and the car is owned by the CEO of Ezecom.

For a moment there I thought it was AiA's celica. :plus1:
