Fees assosiated with TransferWise

Post by SiemReapRoddy »

I think the fee and exchange rate are pretty good using TransferWise because it's bank to bank.

Maybe $3.99 fee + current transfer rate.

But they say when transfering USD outside US they have to use swift which is extra $3.99 + both banks can charge you extra money.

I know noone will be able to tell me what my home bank will charge, but do you have any idea what kind of fees ABA charges when transfering money into them in dollars from outside Cambodia.

I'm trying to find the cheapest way to move my money into country.

Anyone happen to know?

ABA will charge $10 for receiving international transfers, there might also be an intermediery bank used which will also carry a charge from $10 - 30

I would recommend world remit, which can transfer to wing with cheap fees if your sending money to a person.

Thanks for suggestion.

A bit cheaper and much more straight forward.

Swift:

You can expect a $30-40 payment to the intermediary bank. A $10 fee from the receiving bank in Cambodia (at least thats what the few I looked at charge if transferring to an existing account), plus whatever your bank charges.

Personally, I do a wire transfer once a year of a sufficient amount to make the fees minimal as a percentage.

In terms of accessing money, the other two important things to investigate before relocating:

1. Finding a credit union that refunds some ATM fees each month. The one I use refunds up to $20 a month. That allows me, if needed, to withdraw $390 four times with no ATM fee ($400 was the limit ANZ set at their ATMS's - I'll have to find a new bank to use now that they have been sold).

2. Credit Card that doesn't charge you an international transaction fee.

Has any one tried Transferwise as a means to get money to Cambodia or use it in Cambodia? I am trying to get money from the US to Cambodia. wiring in the money would cost me about $55-60, and using a debit card at the ATM would cost me 1%.

Looking at Transferwise website, which does not really explain it that clearly or in detail, it seems to say that they don't do money transfers to Cambodia. But they have something called a "borderless account". I get the feeling I could use this as a debit card in Cambodia but would not be able to transfer money to my Cambodian bank account.

Thanks for any feedback from anyone who understands this service or has used it!

WorldRemit, similar to Transferwise, can be used to send money to Cambodia and cashed out via Wing which you can then go and bank if you prefer; or perhaps transfer from Wing account to whatever banks they're now connected to if that is an option.

Thanks, that's good to know... I am interested to set up a Wing account as well. However, when I look a little further, I see that with World Remit one can only transfer up to $1,000, which is a fairly small amount. Depending on the fees, it may be even more expensive than my ATM card (which is effectively 1%).

I use TransferWise in London to ABA every 3 months. ABA use an intermediary bank, Standard Chartered Bank in New York. TransferWise in the UK use Barclays in London.

There is always $55 that goes missing between the dollars they send and what I receive. ABA takes $10. All sums are under $10,000.

Thanks! So it sounds like it's $10 from ABA, $55 for intermediaries, plus whatever TransferWise charges you. So $65 +

Sounds like a wire transfer from my bank may still be the best way to go, but I will have to call them to confirm. Unless WorldRemit is better somehow but it doesn't sound like it.

The other consideration of course is the exchange rate if you have any; this is often a killer even if the fees are super low.
