US Dollar, the Fed, China and Asia

Post by armchairlawyer »

Hedgeye.com has just concluded a series of 9 hour long videos from some excellent financial commentators. They are all free to view on their website (required to register with email). Look for the Investing Summit.
The one with Jeff Snyder looked at China and the role of USD in Asia, see from 10:26.

Basically, China has decided not to artificially stimulate growth due to the problems that that has created in the past.
That will create a deceleration in growth for the rest of the world, with particularly pronounced effects in the rest of Asia.
That means the recurring dollar shortage problem will resurface.
The Fed has no intention of doing much about this because they say the USD is "our currency and your problem".
So, the USD will soon begin to resume its long-term rise (may take up to 3 months for this to happen). This will impact Asia hard.
Lots more of interest in the video.

I am waiting for the day when an ounce of US Dollars will be worth more than an ounce of gold.

I'll put the green backs on something else.

“Gold … has two significant shortcomings, being neither of much use nor procreative. True, gold has some industrial and decorative utility, but the demand for these purposes is both limited and incapable of soaking up new production. Meanwhile, if you own one ounce of gold for an eternity, you will still own one ounce at its end” — Buffett, letter to shareholders, 2011

Buffett has been quite negative to gold. Then again, so it was that he once said he would never invest in airlines...but he did later so maybe it depends..

Gold has been way too high for way too long. It has to go down at some point, and if the USD goes up, gold goes down, in general. I hope it happens because I want some pretty gold coins, but yeah, outside of electrical contacts and jewelry it doesn't have much use. Maybe excellent as a paperweight because it is much denser than lead.

Sounds like great news to me.
