Cambodia counts the cost of its push to expand coal-fired power
Soaring coal prices and opposition from foreign business stoke doubts over plan.
By Nikkei Asia -
October 1, 2021
The potential cost of Cambodia’s push to boost its reliance on coal power has increased sharply since it began to ramp up two years ago, prompting calls for the government to rethink and promote renewable energy.

As world leaders, banks and companies push to cut carbon emissions by shifting toward cleaner power, Cambodia has been moving in the opposite direction, with plans for new generation capacity and imports that will take fossil fuels from 56% of its grid to almost 75% within the next decade.

International companies warned last year they could scale back manufacturing in Cambodia to avoid breaching climate pledges, with potentially damaging consequences for the economy. And in recent weeks the price of thermal coal has soared to a 13-year high, piling on new costs.

Cambodia will not allow anymore new coal-fired power plant development project

Suy Sem, Minister of Mines and Energy, has said that Cambodia does not plan to develop anymore new coal-fired power plants in addition to the projects already approved by the Royal Government since 2019 and continue to encourage investment in clean energy to respond to climate change.

The remarks were made by the Minister during a working meeting with British Ambassador to Cambodia Tina Redshaw before the start of the 26th UN Climate Change Summit.

He said Cambodia would switch to low-carbon energy sources such as imported natural gas, LNG or hydrogen instead and continue to encourage investment in the clean energy sector.

He said that according to the study of Cambodia’s new energy development master plan, which is being prepared by the ADB for addressing national environmental goals and the global commitment in the energy sector, the ratio of the power of renewable energy sources will be about 59%.

The intensity of greenhouse gas emissions in the new plan compared to the old scenario that Cambodia developed earlier will be reduced by 34% compared to the traditional development.

It like pushing over a Berlin Wall.
You push push push for decades and think you are getting nowhere
and then suddenly it falls over in a day.

lol. I can remember this forum only about a year ago - and the majority of dinosaurs were still voting for coal and taunting any talk of renewables with rubbish about the lights going out when the sun goes down.

We'll all be wearing manbuns soon, and taking up Pilates.
- they reckon clean energy does that to you too.

Don't interrupt with "we will use electric cars" crap as there will be no electricity.

Hydrogen is looking promising & can be produced by solar & wind farms. :ugeek:

Big oil will profit enormously from hydrogen using retrofitted infrastructure.
The energy cycle needs a fuel - batteries will never be good for hgv, trains, aircraft.

Grid solar is now under $0.03 per kwh for a 10 year plant life.

There's a big stoush going on in NW Australia at the moment over a matter of green vs blue hydrogen.

In the green corner, you have Andrew 'Twiggy' Forrest of Fortescue Future Industry fame who is planning to develop a hydrogen producing facility there powered exclusively from renewable/non polluting energy aka solar, wind.

In the blue corner, you have the Woodside Petroleum Limited who is doing the same but powered using it's natural gas resources aka fossil fuel.

Surprise, surprise Woodside are using the simple term 'hydrogen' whereas Twiggy is constantly pointing out it's 'blue hydrogen' rather than 'green hydrogen'.

Renewable generation cost is so much lower than thermal that blue hydrogen will be a transient factor.

New Solar Power Plants of 495 MW Online in 2023
AKP Phnom Penh, November 02, 2021 --

Seven solar power plants of 495 megawatts will be online in 2023 pushing up the supply of such source to represent 20 percent of the total installed power capacity.

The update was shared by H.E. Ith Praing, Permanent Secretary of States at the Ministry of Mines and Energy in a virtual meeting on Singapore-International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) High-Level Forum last week.

The country’s electricity supply is dominated by renewable energy, especially hydro power plants, accounting for 88 percent of the total supply, followed by solar currently represents 9 percent, he said.

He continued that to meet the demand of power consumption, Cambodia executes some coal power plants and imports some.

The key objectives in Cambodia's latest power development plan 2020-2040 include accessibility, reliability, affordability, and security and contribute to addressing climate change.

Cambodia's solar power plants in operation are located in Bavet city of Svay Reing province, Kampong Speu province, and Kampong Chhnang province.
