It would be for peoplelivng in Ratanakiri ofcourse very nice to have an airport overthere, but economicly, i wont buy shares in that company who, invests overthere. I drove overthere in 2016 and was surprised the roads where not that bad as expected, i even get my first offical speeding ticket on the road between Stungtreng and Banlung. I would say its (as often in KOW) more a "prestige-project", look what we have overthere !! ?? Same happened in Spain +15 years ago when the socialist governement insisted to have in every province an airport (there are 52 provinces), and they did built them, but several in fact are never or hardly used. I live only 15 miles from one of them, Casstellon airport, they opened for international flights years after "being ready to operate", and it was mainly used by a local Formula-3000 pilot for trainig sessions. There are now 5 international destinations, probably 10 flights a week (never checked for real). I see happening the same in Banlung if they ever would build it !! Investors in Rattanakiri, no idea, some gemstone-mines or wood-bussiness ?? Rubber ??

KOH KONG, 21 April 2023

The highly anticipated Dara Sakor International Airport, invested by China’s Union Development Group, has reached over 90% completion as of 31 March 2023, with over US$180 million spent on the project.

This is according to H.E. Sinn Chanserey Vutha spokesman and undersecretary of the state Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) told Construction and Property on 19 April 2023.

“By the Q1 of 2023, Dara Sakor International Airport has completed approximately 90.5% and the airport is expected to be officially inaugurated in the middle of 2023, barring any unforeseen issues,” H.E. Chanserey Vutha noted.

Spanning across 218 hectares, the airport’s construction began in 2017 and is projected to be completed within 48 months.

Koh Kong int’l airport not set for trial flights: governor
Van Socheata | Publication date 15 May 2023 | 21:14 ICT

Koh Kong provincial governor Mithona Phouthong has warned that proposed flight trials at the province’s Dara Sakor International Airport could possibly be postponed as the developers need more time to complete construction and address some remaining shortcomings.

The governor said that she was unable to elaborate on the specific issues, but confirmed the delays, noting that the construction company had been unable to confirm their readiness for flight tests.

Sinn Chanserey Vutha, undersecretary of state and spokesperson of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, acknowledged on May 14 that plans to conduct test flights may be further delayed.

“The developers have not yet completed the necessary aviation safety protocols, and there is some work remaining on the facility itself. However, we expect the airport to be operational soon,” he said.

Situated on a 218ha plot of land in Botum Sakor district near the Gulf of Thailand, the new airport is being developed to serve the Dara Sakor Resort – an area touted as a “luxury eco-tourism destination” – at an expected cost of $350 million, with $200 million poured into Phase I alone.

According to the developer’s estimates, the airport may see as many as 20 million passengers per year as early as 2030. The airport can handle wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 777 and Airbus A-340.
