Bank vs MFI interest
Anyone have the up to date rates for Dollar 12 month fixed rates for the better known banks and MFI's.?
I've been hearing lately, some of the banks very near to MFI rates which were substantially better a couple years ago.

Re: Bank vs MFI interest
It's true that you cannot rely on the websites for up to date info on rates, especially for the MFIs (or MDIs as they should be called). Even the rates posted in branch may not be current as you may be offered a different rate by staff. You can probably trust the bank websites for their rates, however.
The last I knew, the best were Prasac and Hatha. They were offering 8% on one year USD fixes.
To open an account now you may be asked for a current lease agreement and possibly a residence certificate from your Sangkat, in addition to passport with E visa. Some banks may not require all this (ABA) but they won't be offering the best rates.

Re: Bank vs MFI interest
I'm not sure I'd want to risk an MFI.
Sathapana Bank seems to have decent rates (if they are up to date): 1 year, 6.25% interest on maturity or 6% interest paid monthly. Higher for longer.

LOLC offers 8% and 7.75% respectively for 1yr if you want to go with an MFI

Like armchairlawyer says, best to check in a branch.

Have there been examples of MFIs going out of business and people not getting their money back?

Not yet.
