Re: Do you feel regret that you don't have MD?
No regret that I don't have a Masters, I was only ever any good numerically at school so made up my mind fairly quickly I wanted to go into the Finance side of business and get the study out of the way as quick as possible so I could enjoy life. Got a very relevant BA when I was 20 which exempted me from the first 2 stages of my professional exams and then blitzed the final 2 stages in 2 sixth month sittings with intensive weekend courses while I was working but still in the study frame of mind. Professionally qualified at 21 and then I could concentrate on real work doing something I enjoyed and getting paid for it. Never wanted to sit another exam again in my life and haven't.
Maybe it's my background but I've always thought non work related degrees are a bit of a luxury, maybe even more so in the competitive global economy and with the high tuition fees these days. An MD might get your foot in the door as employers use the higher qualification to eliminate the masses for an interview shortlist, but it's personal attributes that then determine how successful you are.

I want to go for master degree, however i don't think it will happen anytime soon considering my current job. It keeps me a bit busy.General Mackevili wrote:What degree are you going for?

Hopefully you are not getting sick for your upcoming visit to Cambodia. However, Thailand and Vietnam are nearby.phuketrichard wrote:with degrees being sold in Cambodia

I want to do a double degree in Journalism and International Relation, however in Cambodia, you can't do a double degree.table42 wrote:What is your intended field of study?

A masters is worth obtaining if you can be sure it won't hinder your career progression. Today it's not so frowned upon to take a career break, however if you have a family it can be an issue surviving without income and uprooting yourself to attend a decent university. I did my masters after a year working with a bachelors. I'm not sure it made too much difference with hiring, but today most students only begin with a bachelors and go on to do several degrees, so it's more a matter of keeping up with newer talent rather than anything else.
Now, what I do regret is never going for a PhD. I guess if I ever do, it will be a vanity degree to put on my study wall when I'm ancient.

I'd advise against journalism simply because there's little hope fore employment in the West and the Khmer press is heavily regulated by you know who.Samouth wrote:I want to do a double degree in Journalism and International Relation, however in Cambodia, you can't do a double degree.table42 wrote:What is your intended field of study?
If you can (ie. if you have the $$$ and the people to speak for you at embassies etc.) then a double Science & Humanities/Business/Economics degree in somewhere like Australia is the safest employment option. It's also the highest workload.
Re: Do you feel regret that you don't have MD?
i guess i would remain being poor working as a reporter or journalist, however i would have a backup degree which is international relation. Being rich is not my goal. I just want to work somewhere in the world representing my country.ot mien kampf wrote:I'd advise against journalism simply because there's little hope fore employment in the West and the Khmer press is heavily regulated by you know who.Samouth wrote:I want to do a double degree in Journalism and International Relation, however in Cambodia, you can't do a double degree.table42 wrote:What is your intended field of study?

BTW, English newspapers has more freedom than the Khmer one.
I don't have money to afford oversea school fees. However, i have always been looking for scholarship opportunities.

Re: Do you feel regret that you don't have MD?
Australia has one open to students, but they need to fulfill a strict criteria to get the visa and I think it also requires one of a certain set of prerequisite degrees. Canada was running a similar program and I think the French have a more open one. The USA may be the best option, however that would be run by each institution rather than a government initiative. A left field option might be India, but I have no idea how Cambodia-to-India student visas work.Samouth wrote:i guess i would remain being poor working as a reporter or journalist, however i would have a backup degree which is international relation. The problem from a foreign perspective is that Cambodian universities don't have a good reputation so I'm not sure how certain degrees would translate into a foreign work permit.
Re: Do you feel regret that you don't have MD?
I once applied to three different scholarships at the same time. One in England, Netherlands and Sweden, however, i didn't manage to get even one. I guess my application is not good enough, during that i only had one year of working experience and perhaps my English was really bad. Since, I haven't applied for any other scholarships. I know that Australia and NZ are providing a bunch of scholarships to Cambodian students. However, the program tend to design for government officials.ot mien kampf wrote:Australia has one open to students, but they need to fulfill a strict criteria to get the visa and I think it also requires one of a certain set of prerequisite degrees.
