WTB Wi-Fi AP's in Phnom Penh

Post by StroppyChops »

I want to strengthen my wireless network signal in some dead spots in the house by wiring in some APs with CAT5/6 via a dedicated 1Gig switch - any (reasonable and educated) thoughts, information on where to buy APs? I have the switch and the network experience, looking for local knowledge before outlaying dollar.

Additionally, are EoP devices available/used in Cambodia or is the power too spiky? Anyone doing this with any joy, even better, combining EoP with additional APs?

You should be able to get Cisco APs with POE. Or is that a bit over the top?

As for power, if you're going so far as to build your own private network, you probably want some decent UPSs.

Thanks UT - but chasing EoP, not PoE.

Already have UPS for the NAS and workstation, everything else is mobile.

Chantra Computer Shop sell WiFi APs, don't know if they have what youre looking for though: eg

TPLINK WIRELESS ACCESS POINT MODEL: TL-WA500G $32

Their list of AP's is about halfway down this link http://www.chantracomputer.com/network.html

Network knowledge/experience and then considering to use EoP kind of contradicts itself. In my honest opinion...

When life hands you lemons...

I wouldn't normally try this, which is why I asked if anyone was doing it here. The other option is to cable a full LAN, and "ain't nobody got time for that."

Thanks for your honest opinion, though! ;)

Distances involved and the Faraday Cage effect between floors need a wider solution. Will need to physically network around a couple of issues so may as well put in full runs and then tail APs at the end points for mobile devices.

The 'extender' approach in that link has problems - many devices will 'anchor' onto the first device with a shared SSID it sees, and not automatically switch between zones as you move through the building. Some devices cannot actually see additional physical APs beyond the first one identified with that SSID.

Uniquely configuring the APs will also allow me to give guest access in since areas while protecting my streaming media server and data storage in others.
