Working online in Cambodia (work permit question)

Post by XenoRipley »

I want to move to Cambodia from Thailand and avoid all the stupid pointless regulations like four Thais for every foreigner, 90-day reporting etc. I'm in a job and industry where I can just work online. Is it possible to rent a cheap apartment for 12 months in Cambodia and conduct business online? How can I get a Cambodian work permit, which I believe is now mandatory, if I'm a "digital nomad"?

Cool avatar. :) This question has probably been asked a million times. I don't mind paying for a work permit if I can get one. It just seems I have to get an employer to sponsor me, whereas, in a way, I'm the employer (of Thai staff in Thailand)!

yeah thats part of the thing
usually your employer is the one thats supposed to do it,
if its your own business you need to register your business then you will do your own work permit,
it just depends if your business is worth registering or not? if its big then id recommend it, but if not... you could probs get away with it,
not talking from experience but from when ive enquired about it before

No one knows how the work permit works for "digital nomads". Not even the people in ministry. But you don't necessarily need it if you are not actually working in cambodia for cambodian company. I have been doing it for last 3 years. You just buy the business visa so you can stasy and get multi entry. Though if some point you want to start work for company here and then you need work permit.. I think thatt point you might need to pay all your previous years work permit fees and penalties.

Then again, its possible for you to save yourself lots of trouble in the long run with immigration. Apply for the work permit online for $100.
I do agree working on the computer is hard to spot! But I know in Thailand people have been found out, how long before it happens in Cambodia.

How you apply for work permit when no companies involved?

Get yourself a Tourism Licence $25. Name yourself company ( example : Webworld ) for the paperwork. Once you have a licence, and a medical certificate, you can go online at FWCMS and apply for the work permit. Put down you are the manager of the company.

Is it that easy? If I register a company and make myself manager, won't I then face lots of company accounting paperwork including paying company taxes, personal income tax on my manager's "salary" etc.?
