Which currency applies in Cambodia?

Post by BKK Phil »

Hello:

Will be arriving in Phnom Penh shortly for extended stay. Have noted that many products/ services quote their prices in USD.

1. If quoted in dollars, are payments made in Cambodian Riel (KHR) at the official forex rate of the day, or USD currency?

2. Have already noted in-country visa renewals, apartment deposits & rentals (utilities?), laptops, SIM top-up cards, etc. quoted in USD. What else will I need to pay in USD?

3. Meals, groceries, local transport payable in KHR?

Thanks.

Everyone has their own rate, but the Riel is pegged to the dollar, so it doesn't vary more than a hundred riel. 4000:1 is the street rate, anyone with an electronic register will use something like 4070:1.

Riel is simply inconvenient as there seems to be so few useful large notes in circulation. You'll get it as change, which will be useful for paying moto parking, bottle of water or whatever, but I wouldn't go out of my way to acquire any. No matter what the currency on the box says, you can pay the equivalent in either.

It's been a long time since I bothered, but ATM's used to only give out riel in 10,000៛ or 20,000៛ notes. Try to withdraw US $400 in riel and you'll get at least 80 notes...

most everything you buy or pay for will be in $$, even out in the sticks
only use Riel for smaller items and getting change for things that are $6.50, $2.25, $9.75 etc...

Use whichever you have. It isn't worth giving a second thought.
Despite what angsta states, it’s clear from reading through his posts that angsta supports the free FreePalestine movement.

Riel change is used instead of coins. Don't bring dollar coins.

Use dollars and think of riel as small change.

If you're on a shoestring pay prices in riels using riels, prices in USD with USD. That way you will save small amounts of money otherwise lost in the conversion.

If you don't care about a few cents difference just use whichever is more convenient at that time.

And don't lose big USD notes out of sight. If you hand over a large USD note in an untrustworthy place remember the last digits of the note just in case they try a swap.

I use both all the time, I'll often get 80,000 Riel out of the machine or exchange. Saying Riel is just used as change is pure ignorance.
Silence, exile, and cunning.
