Where to change euros? Cambodia or Thailand?

Post by steevee »

Is it better to change euros (cash) into US$ and Thai bath in Cambodia or in Thailand?
Where will I get the best exchange rate?
I want to change euros in Thai bath and in US$.
I will put them on a fixed savings account in Cambodia.
50% on my Cambodian savings account in Thai bath,
and the other 50% on my Cambodian savings account in US$.
This way I want to spread the risk in exchange rate fluctuations.
Is it better to change the euros in Thailand and take US$ and Thai bath with me to Cambodia and put them in Cambodia on my savings account?
Or is it better to take the Euros with me to Cambodia, change them in Cambodia in Thai Bath and US$ and put them then on my savings account in Cambodia?

My gut instinct would be to change Euro into Thai Baht in Thailand and Euro into US Dollar in Cambodia

https://www.exch.ktb.co.th/ExRateKTB/Ex ... urrentRate

1 Euro = 39.41 THB

http://www.canadiabank.com.kh/en/exchange_rate.aspx

1 Euro = 1.1261 USD

Changing € or any other internationally recognised currency in cambodia has always been better than in thailand.
Go to one of the main money changer like ly hour and never ever do it in a bank.

1. Canadia has a spread of 1.59 cents between their buy and sell rates for a Euro so they can't be making much commission on currency conversions.

2. I went to buy THB at Ly Hour in Sihanoukville and they couldn't even change $200 worth.

3. Changing ever how many thousands of dollars in a money changers in plain view of all and sundry standing in the street versus the privacy of a bank....

Common sense would make anyone with a extra ordinary amount of money, change it in smaller lump sums, ,,,,,

and then go back to your guest house room and hide it under the mattress.

I live in SHV and have no clue if there is a ly hour branch.
I had once my PP money changer (maybe second biggest in town one after ly hour) come to pochentong to change me 15k€ into dollars in my car, for my convenience, any bank gonna do that for you ?
I can present you to my SHV money changer who can change you 10k€ into dolars or baht no sweat, more with a few days advice.
You can do it in his home if you prefer, of course speaking khmer would help for all of the above.
Local money changers usually have a spread of 0.5 to 1 cent...

I must say, you are speaking nonsense to me.

The difference is that I am trying to give advice that is useful to the OP who may well never have visited Cambodia before and therefore may be unsurprisingly slightly reluctant to meet someone he has never met before in a car park in a strange country and hand over 10,000 Euros to just in an effort to save himself a whole $50 by getting an extra half a cent on each Euro.

This forum isn't supposed to be about 'look how big my cock is' or is it?

IMVHO I think the guy should change his Euros in the bank that he is going to open the Fixed Deposit Account and suck up losing the $50, or ever how much, rather than wander around a strange city with thousands of dollars of cash in his pocket or contacting people on a forum who offer to arrange meetings in private houses with people he doesn't know from Adam.

You appear to hold a different view and that is you prerogative.

Good point about the convenience of changing in the place where you'll deposit the stash.

However on 10_15k the difference will be more $250 than 50, considering the spread has to be accounted for twice from € to Thai bath.

I've changed large amounts on several occasions and never had issues. This said I took precautions each time to spot possible tails.
