Where to Buy Quality Pepper From in Cambodia?

Post by Pizzalover »

I m going to visit friends abroad and I thought some good pepper might be a nice little gift. It does not have to be certified Kampot pepper but it should be very good. I have only this Saturday to buy some and the stuff supermarkets looked a bit over-priced. I also would prefer to spend the money with small local traders rather than feeding the big companies. Also my local friends are not so much impressed with expensive stuff but with high quality at good prices. They will surely ask as we discuss kitchen matters at length and at the kitchen table. So in order to impress an established house wife I have to come with something. :)

Anywhere around O'Russei, Thmei or towards the river?

I bought some at the Russian market for overseas family. Cute box but only a tiny bit of pepper in them. Worked for me as it was a token gift but beware the small boxes.

Forget it Pizzalover - that doesn't work out in supermarkets. As Mrs. Stroppy said already, cute box, nothing in, absolutely overpriced. That's something for tourists. If you want to get real Kampot pepper (red, green, white or black) you got to go Koh Kong - that would be the real deal. (hint: most Kampot pepper is planted in Koh Kong - in Kampot they have it too, of course but the price is again too high).

PS. If you buy in supermarkets you'll pay around $ 5.50 for the black pepper and $ 6.50 for the white one (for 100 grams) . For this price you get a whole kilo in Koh Kong.

Kampot pepper has the status of protected geographical indication and must be grown in the stipulated area http://www.kampotpepper.biz/en/apgi.html As such it is subject to audit by Ecocert http://www.ecocert.com/en/certification

The Koh Kong pepper is not the same and has no certification. There is however some very good pepper grown in Koh Kong by the Kurata company http://www.kuratapepper.com/en_products.html and by all accounts is very expensivere. The Kurata Pepper does not have certification.
Because of its certification Kampot Pepper has become an expensive "boutique item" and while you can get excellent pepper in many of the markets for a cheap price genuine Kampot pepper is not one of them. As far as I know Starling Farms http://www.starlingfarm.com/index.htm have a retail outlet for their pepper on 178 st just west of Norodom.

Does their website say "Seasonings greetings from Starling Farm?" If it doesn't it should.

?? What do you mean ? I'm stupid . Exploiting/cheating NGO ??? I mean it's important to know - Pizzalover asked an honest question and it's indeed our job to answer that question honestly.

Sorry Francis I don't do honest answers and I'm certainly not making accusations again Starling Farm. Instead I post silly jokes about the subject matter, which are unfunny to everyone else other than me.

If I have to explain the joke then clearly its not for you.

In the market in Kampot there are a couple of stalls selling only pepper. We chose the girl with the biggest smile who had a huge range of pepper from cheap, cheap to expensive. We were happy with what we got for about $5 for a half kilo of black and $7.50 for white - and red was $24 a kilo I think (so only got 250g); our friends in Europe seemed pleased also.

But for the OP Kampot's a bit far to go shopping if you're in PP. Good luck and let us know if you find somewhere.
