What is the downside and upside of living abroad?

Ask us anything. Cambodia Expats Online has a huge community of long-term expats that can answer any question you may have about life in Cambodia. Have some questions you want to ask before you move to Cambodia? Ask them here. Our community can also answer any questions you have about how to find a job or what kind of work is available for expats in Cambodia, whether you're looking for info about Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, or anywhere else in the Kingdom. You're also welcome to ask about visa and work permit questions as well, as the immigration rules change often, especially since COVID-19. Don't be shy, ask CEO's community anything!

What is the downside and upside of living abroad?

It seemed like for most westerners or specifically people from developed countries preferred living in other countries and as much as places they possibly can to experience new things. I wish i can do that too in the future. However, it seems like it will not ever happen for me in the near future, no matter what The ASEAN will be becoming one community (ASEAN INTEGRATION) in the end of 2015 in which all the people in ASEAN countries can go, live and work in the 10 countries easily and freely.

It might seem like that but it's not true. Most of those people live in the countries they were born in.

I don't know you personally, but i am guessing that you are from developed country right? If you want to contribute in this thread you can just write about your own personal experiences. I just want to heard as much as stories of people who have been living in abroad, before i make a big step (living and working in one of ASEAN countries outside Cambodia) in near future.

Don't be mistaken, Samouth.

I work with a bunch of expats who are not from a developed country. However, they have appropriate skills.

I think i might have interacted too much with only people from developed country. Are they (your coworkers) from Philippine?

Sadly, you are missing the point.

Not every expat is from a developed western country. But!!! They have the necessary skills to do their job.

Do you have the skills to work in an ASEAN country?

I know that some Eastern Europe countries are not really rich. Moreover, i am not a typical Cambodian who always think that white people are rich.

Beside my TEFL degree, i have got a bachelor degree of Civil Engineering. I am going to use that skill to work in another ASEAN country, however i will not be able to make it soon, as i need to work in Cambodia first to gain some experiences.

ASEAN will never happen.
Thailand's current military government does not want it to be put in force.
