I am in no position to speak on the paying of "Top Executives", but I have been at the top, in the middle, and the bottom of unimportant organizations before and have been involved full time with charities (roughly 2 1/2 years) before, so I've at least been around the block.

The one thing I can say though is that lots of people talk big. i.e. "If I were him, I would do this..." "If I were in charge, things would be different..." "I could run the show better." however, they when it comes to performance and actually getting the job done, very few if any are actually capable of making the whole show work.

So therefore in my opinion, as long as the organization runs smoothly and in the black, then the one responsible for keeping the show on the road should be paid as much as is not obscene and is allowed by the public, meaning, you give them as much as you can without ruining their image because they are worth every penny.

$93,500? Even if insurance, car, housing, schooling and other benefits included, it's chump change. Seriously.

are you all people nuts ? Are you seriously saying that if I want to help a Cambo kid I have to fill up that useless bum's 93,500 $ salary first ? I'd rather give 1$ to every child I see in town.
Guys you've really lost your marbles, or - more probably - you have your own agenda in supporting such an obscenity.

Great comment!
Many of the posters here have not run a business or an NGO, or had to engage in the kind of planning and investment that is required for the success of an organization to achieve a goal. It is why I think you get comments like "I'd rather give 1$ to every child I see in town." which of course makes no sense. Maybe he was exaggerating to make his point, but if he was it was certainly unclear what he would choose for a goal that Scott was not attempting.

As you pointed out actually doing something, rather than just talking, is hard, choosing the right things to do is even harder. Getting the best people, people who will be successful is difficult and can be expensive at times. I don't know Scott personally, though I do know someone who does, and who spoke very highly of him. As I understand it, he put a lot of his own personal money into the work. He could make a lot more than that by returning to his original profession.
Certainly there are some NGOs that abuse their status and misrepresent their goals just to make money, and evaluating the good ones is difficult. But making blanket statements calling someone a "useless bum" without any supporting evidence is not sensible or helpful for anyone.
I wish I knew a whole lot more, or a whole lot less.

At the end of the day, it doesn't make a difference if its private or third sector. You get what you pay for.

If the business/organisation is a large or multi million dollar one, then you want the very best person to run it. That means a well educated, inventive, accountable and experienced professional. Same in any business, in any country, in any walk in life.

That probably counts out young Gaudete which is why he's bitter.

... a day working in some sweatshop , like Somali Mam does ? ("rescued" prostitutes must be really happy to leave a 20$/hour job for a 1$/day new one that is also more hard  )
Don't worry they are already sweating somewhere for that dollar , the problem is it's not enough... so will you use 93,500$ to give 256 poor people 1$ a day for an year or rather pay a salary to a guy who by the way surely wastes a lot more money beyond his outrageous paycheque ?
