What money if any can I bring IN for holiday please?

Have some questions you want to ask before you move to Cambodia? Ask them here. Our community can also answer any questions you have about how to find a job or what kind of work is available for expats in Cambodia, whether you're looking for info about Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, or anywhere else in the Kingdom. You're also welcome to ask about visa and work permit questions as well, as the immigration rules change often, especially since COVID-19. Don't be shy, ask CEO's community anything!

Freightdog wrote: Wed Nov 27, 2019 8:26 pm Bring in US Dollars. It’s a good universal currency in much of the world, anyway, and here runs as a parallel currency. UK bank cards will work in the ATMs, but you’ll be charged.

How long are you here, for? How extravagant are your tastes, and what are your expectations? Do you have a budget?
How long is a piece of string?

As a rough and very subjective guide, based on what I do when I’m back.

Car rental runs around $65 per day. Taxi/Bus services are cheap if your willing to mingle.
Beer $1 a glass.
Depends where you drink, but cocktails $2.50 up
A decent meal $5, and plenty of street food would give you change back from that.
TukTuk between $1 and $3 for most local trips

You can spend much more if you want, and I’m sure some spend much less.
If I average a spend of $5 per day on me alone, I’d be surprised, but then I have other distractions, like monitoring the kids homework. It’s only making the most of family time with trips that runs up the costs.
Thanks Freightdog,
It was more for the amount of currency one is allowed to bring in to the country

John Bingham wrote: Thu Nov 28, 2019 12:24 am As above you can only legally bring in less than $10,000 in cash without declaring it. As above you should try not to ever carry so much cash on you. There is no need to much of the time, use your cards and take out less cash. Or else hire a bodyguard.
Brilliant John, thank you for your advise, I will be with my partner and hopefully we should be fine

Well done Sue. :hattip:
We stir up these guys regularly too
- in the hope they will murder each other one day. 8)

I hope you have a great trip.
Most of us expats call it KOW - Kingdom of Wonder
(although it is still KO War to some. chuckle)
We have the same third world issues that third world citizens live with every day. But it is generally far safer here than most of Africa, the Middle East, Sth and Central America and large tracts of London - for example.
Keep posting about your trip. We need more women on CEO to raise the average intellect - and and the average fighting capability.

Haha! I am so excited! Doing Thailand then Cambodia, Sihanoukville, onto Koh Rong, up to Phnom Penh, Siem Reap.
Vietnam. Back to Bangkok! Then Kent! 5 weeks total

Yes, I have another question!
I think I'm right that because we're probably going to be in Cambodia for more than 14 days we'll need a 30 day visa?
VOA?

Welcome to CEO, original poster. Please don’t let all the keyboard warriors here scare you or put you down.

As to your questions. US Dollars and Cambodian Riel is the currency. Everything is paid in US Dollars with Cambodian Riel as small change (4000 Riel = 1 US Dollar).

First, 10,000 US dollars is the max allowed to be carried. About 1,000 US dollars per week is more than enough. If you pre-pay for lodging, much less.
100 Dollar bills can be exchanged for smaller currency at money exchangers or banks. Be wary using them at restaurants or shops as fakes may be exchanged. Initially bring 100 US Dollars in 20 Dollar bills for the tourist visa and car ride, and the rest in 100 Dollar bills for exchange.

If you are a citizen from certain parts of Africa, you must carry a certain amount to enter the country. Actually all visitors are supposed to have enough, but passport control will actually stop and demand it be shown or refuse entry. British or Australian or US or other western citizens, especially caucasians, they just wave on through.

Go to the airport by car. Any long distance travel go by car. Carjackings are very rare. The most used ride hailing apps are PassApp and Grab. Download before coming to Cambodia.

The most common robbery is getting a backpack ripped off you while riding a motorcycle. Next is riding a tuk tuk. Otherwise violent crime is not common. Don’t ride a motorcycle. Travel by Bujaj (Indian tricycle) or car.

Wear a fanny pack or sling. Nothing screams tourist more, but it’s more secure. Never let it out of your sight.

Don’t stay at hostels or open air tents or any shared rooms. Keep your fanny pack locked at the front desk when not on you. Preferably with a small combo lock on the zipper as well. Take small money amounts (50 to 100 US dollars total) with you to go out.

As the eternal traveler to the Kingdom of Wonder, this is what I do when I go.

Anyone else have other positive suggestions so this lady can have a wonderful time?

I cannot see where Sue has said which country she is presently coming from. No point in saying bring USA $, if she is in Australia as she would get a better rate bringing A $ and changing them in Thailand or Cambodia. The same could be said for many other currencies.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Yeah, don't listen to DO!s and DONT!s

You can do anything - it's all about the attitude that you carry.
