What happens to homeless foreigners after they are arrested?
What happens to homeless foreigners after they are arrested?
There are a lot of stories about homeless foreigners being arrested. Many of us have met or seen homeless foreigners. One I met was a nice man, and was harmless. But he was an alcoholic. When people would give him money, he would buy beer and cigarettes. He was skinny. On a later visit, people who knew him said he had been arrested. I asked them what happened to him after that. Nobody knew.
Do these people get deported?
Do they stay in jail?
Does anyone know what has actually happened to anyone in this situation?

There's this patch of scrubland just past the airport:
Silence, exile, and cunning.

I believe they get pressed to pay their dues, but if that fails, depending on what country they're from, they try to send them back to their country with the help of that country.

Immigration jail. Horrible place. Then the parent embassy arranges a flight out and they get dumped at the nearest airport in their home country....otherwise, immigration jail until they get tired of seeing you and release you to rinse and repeat the cycle.

Re: What happens to homeless foreigners after they are arrested?
A new law came into effect last year making overstay of visa in Cambodia a crime. I tried to find the media link that makes reference to this new law (maybe somebody can find it and post the link/s). Last year, a British national who escaped custody for murder in Thailand was located in Siem Reap. He had apparently been in Cambodia for around 2 years with an expired visa. He was convicted on the overstay and (by memory) sentenced to 8 months in prison under the new law. I read somewhere that it is now a crime to overstay a visa for more than 3 months. Within 3 months is a $10 a day overstay fine.
A buddy in Siem Reap (restaurant owner) told me Cambodia police were actively rounding up foreigners their working on expired visas and were being put in the court system with prison sentences given starting from 3 months, dependent on how long their visas were expired. Deportation then followed.

Eddie is back home now and working for several months
Re: What happens to homeless foreigners after they are arrested?
They put them in the immigration detention centre opposite the airport. Immigration give them the good news about how much in overstay charges they owe. If they have.friends or family who aren't sick to the back teeth of them then the funds be available sooner rather.than later to.pay off the balance and pay for a flight somewhere. If no one willing to stump up the cash then they may stew there for a while. Sometimes embassies can get part or all of the fees waived particularly if the detainee is a.hopeless duck up.
So a lot of variables. Generally couple weeks in the big house before things can be sorted out. Visitors are allowed.
