What does it mean when a cop says hello?

Ask us anything. Cambodia Expats Online has a huge community of long-term expats that can answer any question you may have about life in Cambodia. Have some questions you want to ask before you move to Cambodia? Ask them here. Our community can also answer any questions you have about how to find a job or what kind of work is available for expats in Cambodia, whether you're looking for info about Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, or anywhere else in the Kingdom. There are no motorcycle cops. There are however plenty of police units who happen to ride motorbikes. Anyway, I think you are being paranoid to the extreme. If a cop nods or smiles at you, give them the same back. They are just being friendly.

The fact of my posting proves it cannot be paranoia. An unfounded fear is caused by a lack of information. If a person seeks information to confirm or deny an idea, then getting the right information will end the unfounded fear not paranoia, which is a disease label.

The term paranoia has lost all meaning, since it is now used as an insult by a certain over-educated segment of Western populations.

Sorry, calling bullshit here. Being frightened of smiling policemen is pretty much the definition of paranoia - it has nothing to do with "over education" and everything to do with you being not just paranoid but seemingly intellectualy light weight and unable to deal with criticism too. Me I'd rather see smiling policemen, than ones with batons drawn, tazers aimed and a snarl on their faces.

One of the ones in blue. Not the motorcycle cops I see wearing olive green.

I have a feeling it might mean they are gearing up for a shake-down. The logic would go like this: for the privilege of being in our country, you have to pay us off from time to time.

Has anyone heard of this? What would be the best response? Leave the country? Stop using deoderant?
Unless it was followed by "what have we here" the best response is "Hello"
