Welding high-tensile steel

Post by kiwiincambodia » Sat Jul 05, 2014 6:26 pm

Try Brian from smokey da boar. His machine shop over the road has some of the best welders in town.

Edited. I think his shop is called hardcore engineering. Could be wrong.

For sure Brian could do it. I've had him to some nice stuff before (not like what you're looking for but I know he could do it). Is the bike kickstand only? Pretty sure a normal gas welder could do it.

Kickstart, not stand. Stand would be easy, I could do it.

i think you should be able to get it stick welded for like $2 and have it work fine for at least a little while until it's a better time and it can be replaced.

Was quoted $80 for the cheap one, over $100 for the genuine part.
There may be another solution:
I found a different kickstart that will do the same job, second-hand, $30. One problem: the female part, which fits over the crank, is larger, but I was thinking if I make a sleeve out of mild steel pipe and insert it, then when I tighten it, it will hold.

The shiny kickstart on the right is the $30 one.

Ideas?

Address for Smokey da Boar? The Engineering shop?

OD, thanks, you may be right.

I'm not a welder, but I know high tensile is not easy to weld. A fella I live with is a master welder. He's at work in Oz at the moment, but I just sent him an email to ask him if its possible and how it should be done ie: stick, MIG or TIG. I will let you know as soon as he gets back to me mate ( probably in the next day or two)
