I want to clear up some misunderstanding about the Chinese

Ask us anything. Cambodia Expats Online has a huge community of long-term expats that can answer any question you may have about life in Cambodia. Have some questions you want to ask before you move to Cambodia? Ask them here. Our community can also answer any questions you have about how to find a job or what kind of work is available for expats in Cambodia, whether you're looking for info about Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, or anywhere else in the Kingdom. You're also welcome to ask about visa and work permit questions as well, as the immigration rules change often, especially since COVID-19. Don't be shy, ask CEO's community anything!

Sadly that also happens even in the UK - not uncommon to hear a conversation along the lines of:
Q: Where are you from?
A: London
Q: Yeah, but where are you, you know, from?
A: London, my ancestors moved from Delhi in 1860.
Q: Ah, so you're Indian then.

(Same for pretty much any other country the British had in that little empire back in the day)
thats better than chinese indonesian, i still remember how much racism i have to bears and faces everyday when i was still a little kid, i want to love my country but being treated like a spy and enemy make me hate them rather than love them, feel like running away and switch to other nationality lol

So ! It could be very nice to mix the cultures (with chinese) and I am definitely in love with the "culture discovering", like all the westerners here. It's why we are here, because we love the country and the people, nothing more. Why mixing each other with Khmers and not with chinese people ?

Oh! In fact, for chinese people, Westerners seem to be transparent when they walk next to them in the street. Oh! And the very most part of chinese people even don't speak 1 word in English... (and they don't care) not surprised why all the menus, advertising (...) are translated in 中文字母 ; why the Khmer company look for staff speaking chinese and why the amount of school which learn chinese increase so much.

You know, when an Italian meet a German and a Khmer here, they use the same protocol to communicate together. This protocol is called "English".
When I arrived in South East Asia, I was very bad in English... never learned anything as my mother tongue is "French"... but I wanted to meet people here, so I learned, step by step, talking with people. If you want, you can ! And fun fact : the native English speakers never judge the level of foreigners who speak their language because they are smart enough to understand that we make the effort to speak their language (the language which wins the globalization race). But the most part of chinese don't want to forget their pride, lower the head and speak a foreign language. Too proud. So, the meeting will never happen together.

We now wait to see if the tourist places in Cambodia will look like "Pattaya with Russian people" (cheers to them) or looks like Tibet (pray for Tibetans).

( Sorry for my English, I don't use a "software" :-D just my poor old brain... ^_^ )
It’s hard to win an argument with a smart person, but it’s damn near impossible to win an argument with a stupid person.

I was recently in Phnom Penh with my wife, and we were sitting on the communal balcony of our guesthouse floor when a youngish Chinese guy with tattoo sleeves sat down with us. We had a long conversation via Google translate and he seemed like a decent guy. Incredibly patriotic, but, sadly, seemed hostile towards the Cambodians, constantly calling them lazy and stupid. Said he was here to open a supermarket. He seemed conflicted between being the nice guy that he seemed to be, and being the Chinese gangster stereotype (that he could well have been). Bonus stereotype point: chain smoker. This was my first verbal interaction with a Chinaman in Cambodge. My first physical was attempting to queue at the airport.....

Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indo, Singapore Chinese are all “Chinese”, PRC to expats. It doesn’t matter where they are from.

Also. My friend (Khmer) dad is Chinese and he saw some young Chinese misbehaving and berated them. They literally bowed their heads and shuffled off.

Not sure what to make of that.

Singapore Chinese are Singaporeans at heart. Strong belief in following the law and equal justice. Almost Japanese like.

Taiwanese are a different breed.
