Where would the risk be? I don't work but too young to get a retirement visa. So the (non dodgy) agents arranged a freelance WP for me. With that WP they extended my 1 year EB visa again last month. When immigration comes to check up on me (happens every 3 months or something) they just ask to see my passport, never the WP cause they know I don't work. I'm failing to see the risk involved.
Last year, I among others in Takeo, was summoned to an interview with two senior officers from immigration. The one who dealt with me carefully checked all my documentation, and informed me that provided I continued to follow the rules I would be welcome to stay in the country for as long as I liked, but all foreigners needed to be aware if they broke the rules, when Immigration found out(and we will he added) the offender would be deported. :hattip:

You may be right, risks are minimal...you are lucky because you seem to have a good relationship with your local Immigration officials, piss them off though and they are within their rights to deport you because they know you don't work but are holding an EB EOS.

It will take some time, but immigration & employment policies/policing of are going to keep getting stricter, more so than they already have over the past couple years, which is why I advise people to start doing everything by the book...not trying to be a scaremonger. For people with long-term interest in remaining in Cambodia, it is best to do so the right way.

In your circumstances whiteribbon, I would suggest you go the ER (Retirement) EOS route.
you scared me but I thought the whole point of getting the freelance WP is that Freelance means that I don't work unless someone offers me a job. So I think I'm doing it the right and legal way for my situation. The immigration officers seem to think the same way for now, but indeed who knows when they change the rules again. I would love to have an ER but seems impossible in my situation. Sidenote: the immigration officers over here are amazing, over the past years I've never given them any money and they never asked for any, I just offer them a drink when they come by :thumb:

Okay, so what it's sounding like is the "employment letter" can be drafted in any case (quotes used intentionally). That said, do you think it's safer to do the self-employed WP online, then draft my own letter to take into an agency in February when the current EB expires, or just ask an agency to take me through the whole process? I'm in SR, if anyone knows a good agency to manage the WP and "employment letter" to get the EOS, that would be helpful. Lease ends soon, so I'm having to consider if I take the risk and stay, or move on. Anecdotal evidence is looking like it's in my favor, but any further info or agency referrals are welcome. Thanks so much for the help, all!

Don't be mistaken that you can just whip up your own letter. There is a format that immigration likes to see and there has to be pretty red stamps here and there as well.

I've only heard of a few freelancers that drafted their own letters with successful results and that was almost a year ago now.

For my last EB EoS, I had a legitimate employment letter from a registered Cambodian company and my agent was nervous about submitting it because she told me that the date was in the wrong place and she was worried about it being rejected. I had the company draft another letter in alignment with her recommendation and it went through fine. The point is, is that things are getting stricter by the moment.

Do keep us posted on your progress and results though. Best of luck :thumb:

Much appreciated, Brody, and all who have offered input. And exceptionally valid point about formatting and "checking all the boxes" to make it a valid letter. I think I will talk to one of the agencies in town and see what they have to say.

My long term visa expires 25th November. How soon before can I get a new one? Is there any kind of time limit? Normally I don't care but I'm looking to go abroad on the 20th for Water festival.

Many thanks

Unless things have changed (which is possible), you can do it within 30 days without complicating things.

Hi guys! So after reading through that load of confusing mess I want to make this clear for me for when I arrive in Phnom Penh soon.

1) Upon arrival in Phnom Penh I can apply for a business visa at the Phnom Penh airport for about $35 which is good for 1 month stay

2) I can then take that business visa to a any travel agency or the immigration office right across the street from the Phnom Penh airport and extend my business visa for about $280 (Do I really need a letter from a business in order to extend my visa or can I just pay the $280 and done?)

From what I gathered its:

Get B visa
Go on foot looking for jobs
Find job and get a letter from them
Take letter to get B visa extended
Use extended B visa to get a WP
Enjoy my stay in Phnom Penh for a year

Is this correct?

Incorrect.
You are not qualified for an EB extension because you don't have a job.

You can apply for an EG extension, max 6M, which gives you 6M max to find a job (plus the initial one that's 7 months). If you succeed, you can use documents from your employer to apply for an EB extension after your EG expires. if you don't, you have to leave the country when your EG expires.
