Tough times for orthodontists in PP...?

Post by chinesetakeaway »

Ms Chinesetakeaway on a recent visit to her orthodontist where she’s been having treatment to straighten her teeth with metal braces was told to start coming every 1-2 weeks for realignment. Each visit is $100. I’m no expert but read that every 4-8 weeks is common and conversely moving the teeth too quickly can have adverse outcomes. Anyone more knowledgeable?

As a teenage snaggle toothed walrus, I used get adjusted around every three weeks for a few years and then once a month after.

Personally, I have no idea, but I asked my friends at Google "how often to adjust teeth metal braces", and there were various replies like:

"While you have braces, you'll need to visit the orthodontist for an adjustment every 8 to 10 weeks."

"each appointment will be made around three to eight weeks apart. Some patients may need to wait longer if the wires are made from a material that requires a longer range to take effect. On the other hand, some patients may fall on the shorter end of this spectrum."

"Although convention states that the patient returns every 6-8 weeks to have the brace adjusted, there is no consensus or evidence to support a specific timeframe. Indeed some orthodontist see their patients as frequently as every 4 weeks and others as long as every 10 weeks."

That last one was inviting patients to be part of a research study. The result will be published in Sep 2020.
Patients would be put into 4 groups as follows:
Patients will be seen every 4 weeks to adjust their orthodontic braces.
Patients will be seen every 6 weeks to adjust their orthodontic braces.
Patients will be seen every 8 weeks to adjust their orthodontic braces.
Patients will be seen every 10 weeks to adjust their orthodontic braces.

My daughter had braces some years ago when she was 14 years old. This was in New Zealand. As I recall the orthodontist quoted a total price at the beginning regardless of the number of visits. He drew up a schedule of visits for each individual patient based on various criteria like age, condition of teeth etc. I think my daughter went every 1 or 2 months but could be called for additional visits as needed. Treatment lasted about 18 months and the price was $6000.

Offend? No. Irritate? Yes.

And you've been told, many times, and yet you carry on sticking two fingers up to everyone.

You're like a bloke who routinely farts in the bar and thinks it's hilarious.
