Tonle Bati, Oudong Mountain, or.......?

Post by Gator »

I've got a whole day to kill tomorrow and would like to do a day trip out of PP to see some old temples. I've been to Phnom Chisor, already. The other obvious 2 are Tonle Bati or Oudong. Out of those 2, which one is best in your opinions? Also, are there any others worth seeing that can be seen in a day trip from Phnom Penh? Doesn't matter how small. Thanks!

The temples at Tonle Bati are pretty crap, just a couple of brick towers and a temple that are falling to bits. It does have the reservoir nearby with overpriced food. Oudong isn't all that amazing either, there are various stupas and ruins around the hill, and a pleasant view.

Tonle Bati has so many beggars! It's sad.

Like a scene from Monty Python.

Nice little island and bungalows, if you can ignore them after a while. They are a fixture.

Phnom Tamao also. :(
Melvin Udall: Never, never, interrupt me, okay?

Not if there's a fire, not even if you hear the sound of a thud from my home and one week later there's a smell coming from there that can only be a decaying human body and you have to hold a hanky to your face because the stench is so thick that you think you're going to faint.

Even then, don't come knocking...Not for ANY reason.

Agree.
Oudong is nothing spectacular but a nice change from the hustle and bustle of PP. Bring a hat and loads of 100 riel notes and stay away from aggressive monkeys .
Haven't been to Tonle Bati, but if it it is worse than Oudong it says something

It's an easy drive down Highway 21 on the west side of the Bassac to Phnom Sa Ang. A lovely little hill top temple in magnificent farmland. Guaranteed no tourists. Or a taxi to Takeo and a speedboat ride to Phnom Da, depending on water levels. In the wet season it is the best experience in Cambodia blasting along the ancient canals that are nearly 2000 years old and run like super highways into Vietnam. You ride in a fiberglass dinghy with a big outboard, it's a real blast. You can also go to the museum with ancient artifacts, people are still digging them up and selling them for a song.
Was it the Funan Empire?
Outdong is average, Bati is ordinary. Both have beggars in profusion. There is a guy at the Indochine in 136 with a RAV4 who knows the ropes for the boats.

oudong is fun on a Sunday. All the Khmer youth there havig open air dances. not a lot of barang so you are still treated as a bit of a curiosity.
I like tonle bati. It is a bit like a legoland verison of Angkor Wat but its quiet and has atmosphere, especially at dusk. Kids are are a pain though and food is overpriced, but wlaking the plank to the rafts is an experience.
The Zoo is not too far from Tonle and that is interesting for the bears and huge pythons. Monkeys are a nuisance and again popular with locals on Sundays and you can get as much attention as the exhibits. Whats this strange white monkey? why is it wearing clother? who let it out the cage? can we eat it ?

I've always liked Tonle Bati more than Oudong. Phnom Da is nice but a long day ride from the city. Totally doable though and probably the best of the three options. Keep it for another day.

I've only been to Phnom Chisor of the places mentioned here, and I've been there many times. How would you rank the other places mentioned compared to it? I've always liked Phnom Chisor as a short trip out of Phnom Penh, but not really anything else than that. If the other places are less liked than Phnom Chisor, I don't feel any need to visit them
