Is there any Civil Engineer out there? Seeking some advice

Post by Samouth »

It has been really hectic for me within these couples month as i was working on my thesis for my civil engineering class and was utterly busy within these couple days as i have to beat the deadline which is today. Fortunately i finished the design and stuff on time. I will print it out and hand it in today afternoon. However it is not an end for my school life. I will have to defend my thesis next week, so i have couple more days to recall all the lessons.

I wonder if there are civil engineer amongst the CEO posters. If there are, can you guys do me a favor. I was thinking that it would be better for me to hear from those who walked on this path before me and share with me their experiences. Can you guys give me some suggested questions that you think they might be asked during the defend?

Here is our project. My partner and I were working on a project which is about the building of 6 floors apartment. We were working on
- Designing
- Estimating
- Scheduling
- Safety practices
- Building technology

There are balconies with glass balustrades.

Samouth, I think we could use some more information on your thesis.
Are you incorporating biomimicry? How about incorporating cutting edge concepts e.g.

I think we need more information before we can comment my friend.

Oh, and I also don't see any aircon inlets, is this for Cambodia?

Forgive me for saying so, Samouth, but it looks like a clone of De Castle in Toul Kork.

There are tons of glass-walled balconies in every single western country and quite a few in Cambodia. Besides being an annoyance to clean, there's nothing wrong with them.

I don't get it. Is it a design course, a construction/procurement course, or engineering?

My bad. I should have written it more detail. I am also sorry for late reply as i have been really busy for this couple days. I was working on my power point for the defend. Therefore, i couldn't find some spare time to get on CEO. :(

MY degree is bachelor of Civil Engineering which has to do with construction.

-Designing: For this one, we did the design for the structure of the building. We calculated the diameter of the column, beam and foundation (pile and pile cape) and the thickness of slab. We need to make sure that those structure are big enough and resistance to the weight of the building ( dead load) and the load of people and stuff placed in the building and wind and earthquake (live load). The most important thing we calculated the requirement of the steel.

-Estimate: We estimated the cost of the building, including constructions materials, laborers, staff and everything involving in the project from the start to finish.

-Scheduling: We predicted the period of the construction. We need to find out how long would it takes this project to finish.

-Safety practice: For this part is all about writing the summary of the all the lessons about safety practices in construction world we have learned.

-Building technology: It is also all about writing the summary of the lessons about construction technology we learned.

There are a lot of works to do and this thesis is really long, more than 100 pages. It took me so many months to finish. It is really boring and hard. :(

I understand how this can confuse you as it is completely different from European countries and other countries. I once asked my friends about their thesis and i was surprised as their thesis are really thin, just about 30 to 40 pages.

Let me give you a glimpse of Cambodia's higher education system.

As i know in European and other countries in the world.
people are trained to be a road Engineer, bridge Engineer, building engineer, surveyor, and quantity surveyor. So it means that Civil Engineering is broke down into small areas and people only focus on their specific skill and they have time to learn and research more on that subject.

However, in the kingdom of Cambodia, If we studying Civil Engineering, we will learn all of above subjects. We learn about building, bridge and road, estimate, etc. There is no breaking down and i do feel that we have bitten more than what we could chew. Even thought we learnt a lot of sujects, but we only learned the basic of each one. We didn't really learn more detail about each subject.

PS: i hope i have used the right technical words. I really don't know much about the construction related technical words as all materials we learned were translated from French and are all in French language. :(

It is okay Jamie. I have already sorted it out. I just wanted to do a survey to see if there are many foreigners in Cambodia working in the construction sector.
