that Khmer power thing

Post by curiosity »

I got to know some Khmer folks and found that they need to show you that they are "on top" for every little thing (Chinese seem to be much more confident in that way). Did you also make that experience?

The Phnom Penh pseudo glitterati are not representative of the Khmer people as a whole. :hattip:

It is a part of their culture.

I call it acting superior.

It plays out in many aspects of life.

If you take people to a restaurant, they will photograph the food and post it on facebook to display the good food they are eating.

If you give money to a poor person, they will brag about it to all their friends.

It is common to see boys hitting each other.

They will throw rubbish everywhere except their own home.

On the road, they dont give way to others. They always go first if they can.

Not my experience, but I see where you are coming from, I think. Are you doing business with these people ?

I don't think it's specifically Cambodian, but Khmer society is very much based on hierarchy and social standing. Showing what you've got and who you are is something you see all over Asia, but elsewhere too; the nouveau riche everywhere feel the need to mark their status.

There seem to be foreigners here going around with huge persecution complexes, I feel pity on them.

In western countries there are some people messed up in the head.

In Cambodia there are people some from western countries who are messed up in the head. In Sihanoukville a few years ago, there were people it was wise to avoid. I have not been to Kampot this year, but there are probably people like that there.

There are various reasons for this. With some people, drugs have destroyed their brain. In many cases, it is because they feel inferior. They try to get attention, and act superior, and can be stupid in how they go about it.

It is another form of the same thing. Trying to act important. Trying to act superior.

It can also be seen from time to time with some of the trolls on this website. People who just post stupid things to get attention.

It is sad to see some westerners who just seem to lack social skills.

There was one young fellow I met, who told me the westerners in PP are not friendly. I met him at another place. I told him people are friendly here. A little later I was sitting at a restaurant chatting with two other westerners. He came along, and I introduced him. The others said hello, then continued on with what they were discussing. He got up and walked away. He seemed to think, if he was not the immediate center of attention, people were not friendly. If he had just waited until they finished what they were discussing, they would have talked to him. But he did not stay around long enough. Unless he learns, he probably has a sad future.

I met another foreigner who said he was lonely and depressed. He picked up prostitutes, and the morning after he was lonely and depressed again. I tried to tell him he can have real friends, and even introduced him to a nice girl. He was not interested.

I met another foreigner who went to a shop to change $100. They told him they did not have change. He yelled at them, and told them how stupid they were. He went to another place, and the same thing occurred. Some people were scared to be honest with him. I told him to learn how things are here, and adapt. Dont expect them to be like other countries. After a couple more episodes, the police told him to leave town.

Some people like this go on to do stupid things to get attention, and act important. They become people others avoid.

If anyone reading this feels you may be going down this pathway, dont do stupid things to get attention. If you do, people will avoid you. Be a good person and people will like you. You may not meet them immediately, but when you meet them, good people will like you.
