Teaching Jobs - Advice Sought
Teaching Jobs - Advice Sought
Good Evening one and all.
After a brief hiatus from Cambodia, I've been doing some consulting work in the UK. I have been working with some schools, which required me to get a DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) check. Unsurprisingly, it came back clean, and I am permitted to work with children and within school environments.
I find myself at a crossroads in life, and have recently been giving serious consideration to teaching. My background is almost 30 years in business environments, (mainly sales driven), and wondered whether my personal work experience would be of benefit teaching something like "Business Studies" in SEA? I come with a wide experience in the business world, and a DBS certificate that allows me to work with children.
The advice I seek is whether it is worth pursuing what I think would be my dream. The last 12 years of my business life have been spent running businesses in foreign countries, where training and coaching and mentoring were the most important part of my job. I loved this aspect, and took great satisfaction from seeing the transition of my colleagues to the great employees they have become and continue to be.
Perhaps I am being naive, and my skills won't translate as well to the classroom. I suppose that is going to have to be a blind leap of faith. But I really would welcome the feedback from the forum on this? Silly little things like, what could I realistically be expected to earn? Are my skills transferable in this sense? I really would appreciate any advice you might all be able to give.
Many thanks in advance.

Re: Teaching Jobs - Advice Sought
Hey Yerg. Wow!
I am not a teacher kinda guy, so no help there. (petrified of kids, prefer wild animals)
But i always encourage people to live their dreams - no matter what!
I do, at terrible cost - but i could not do otherwise.
What are we here for?
Personally, i would think your particular skill set will translate to the classroom - because those rare and precious skills translate to everywhere.
I encourage you to give it all. There is a good chance it is going to work, not just for you (that too) but especially for the youth here that need exactly what you have.
Keep posting your decision making process, i am sure other members will be able to provide more specific advice/info.
Good one, Yerg!! (the dream)

Thanks Stern.
It is a dream, but it needs to be considered carefully rather than a "both feet first" approach. It is hugely scary to think about doing anything different to what I have been doing for 30 years almost.
Fear of failure is always there, but I've rarely worried about that. I'd rather fail after trying than fail to try at all. The worst that can happen is that I find it's not for me and go back to what I am good at.

Unless you are thinking of an academic position at a university (which will require academic qualifications - at minimum an MBA), I pretty much think there is no demand for 'Business Studies' teachers in SEA.
You could be next.

There are "business studies universities" all over SEAsia, but they probably want academic people, PhDs and such, if you have that kind of background, it could work out.
Without a PGCE and QT(L)S, you are pissing in the wind. Teaching is a depressing profession at the best of times, imagine doing it for almost sweet FA, with no respect?
A better plan is to be some kind of bulshitty American-style corporate business trainer, whether Cambostan is the most lucrative market for that, who knows.
Write a course, make a YouTube channel, sell an e-book, but prepare to be underwhelmed. If you put yourself through the torture of 2 years of teacher training in the UK, and get all the bits of paper, you can realistically land a proper teaching job in SEAsia. I think most people make their money outside of a job, with "tutoring". It sounds like a depressing existence to me. Most people surely want to get away from UK-style high pressure poor work-life balance, not transfer it to somewhere with more risk.

I'm not like other boys...
