Is taxi driver always ask for more than agreed price?

Post by Samouth »

I have never been taking taxi from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh and vice versa, but today my friends and i took a taxi from Sihanoukville to Phnom, because we couldn't book any bus tickets. The agreed price was $55. We shared it with an Australian guy, so including me and my friends. We were four people on the car. It meant we would pay $13.75 each, but we decided to pay him $14 each without telling him. Guess what when arrived Phnom Penh. We talked to him where he should drop 4 of us. Since we are staying in different places, so he will need to bring us to our places one by one. Then, he asked us to pay him $5 more, as he will have to stop in many places. After we discussed for awhile, we decided not to pay him more, because the guy at the agency company said, we can ask him to drop us anywhere we want without extra pay. Then, after i told him that we decided not to pay what he asked. He drove crazily. He lost his temper. He didn't drop me at my place. He stopped somewhere which was about 900 meter from my place. I walked home. I was indeed bad taxi ride experience.

Sounds normal to me. They (the drivers) are usually like this in my experience. They are quite happy to drop off various parcels on the journey which usually adds a lot of time onto the trip that you have paid them for,but if they have to drop people off in various locations they get angry.

Depends if i can say the name in Cambodian so it can be understood, if I know where I am going I stick to t a price within a resonable range .....I f they are not greedy they get a tip....if they are lob lon no tip and still pay they same...then they get angry, but the price I pay is more than a Cambodian pays so they are greedy....

Generally no problems, but I have a moto so limited contact with tuk/moto drivers
I was born with nothing , and I still have most of it left.

Yep. I think you guys made a good call.

The agent told you he would. Either he was lying, or the driver was trying to squeeze you for more money.

Either way, that's for those 2 entities to sort out themselves.

And yes, a taxi driver trying to squeeze you for every extra nickel and dime is practically protocol.

I would love to give him some tips actually, but he was a bit greedy. if he dropped me at my place without asking for more money i would give him some more money.

Some tuk tuk and moto drivers are crazy, but there are some good too. Actually i had a lot of bad experiences with Tuk Tuk and motor drivers. They are too greedy and rude. I hate using them. I love riding my scooter.

I always like the tuktuk line "is more because you barang bigger", just before they load 15 Khmer passengers in and lurch off on a buckled axle.

If you had agreed to 4 drop off points BEFORE you left and he agreed ,than i agree you should not have paid him,
BUT The price he agreed to was point A to point B not c, d, & e
because the guy at the agency company said, we can ask him to drop us anywhere we want without extra pay.
BUT did u mention FOUR PLACES NOT ONE

BUT :please:
you than asked him to drop u all off at 4 different places after u arrived, you should have paid him, He should not have to drop off 4 people at 4 separate places for the same price as one stop. That is totally unfair to him and taking advantage of him as well. $5 was cheap
sorry you were wrong
