I always find these pricing threads incredibly frustrating. Pizzalover has a lot more tolerance for bullshit than I have.
PCZZ, as always, gives good advice. As do a few others.
But there are some that just spout bullshit on purpose. Go figure why.
One poster on this thread, I won't name and shame, is a prime example. His Khmer wife does all his food shopping for the house, and he damned well knows that barang are charged 3 to 4 times more than locals on many many items.
I personally think the Mods should be a lot more strict on 440 type bullshit. People have a right to know how much the locals charge them above and beyond what they charge each other, so they can make their own decisions about whether to stay in a country with such unscrupulous vendors. 30 countries experience , and with negotiation they all charge around %20 extra for foreigners. PP, Cambodia, make that at least 200% up for 98% of vendors. Very rare to find an honest vendor that won't charge a foreigner a lot more for food.
I personally solely use the supermarkets now, as at least everyone pays the barang price in them, and when they have specials, you can get things much cheaper as a single barang than at any of the markets. Also, the meat is refrigerated.

I don't remember getting ripped off at markets. I usually found the vendors to be pretty honest. Rusty's market is still going strong but prices are the same as at supermarkets except after lunch on Sundays when it is near closing time. It's only open three days a week. Ginger is always expensive, until recently it was $40 a kilo, now down to about $32.
How much is ginger in Cambodia?
I find shopping in supermarkets and using the self serve payments system saves heaps. Lemongrass can be a dollar each put but a few in the rubber band with the spring onions and it is free. Putting a couple of big bits of ginger in with the onions saves a lot as well.
Supermarkets try and police this, occasionally I have seen uniformed police snooping around the shoppers. Its hilarious.
Putting one newspaper inside another is a good way to get one free paper, the machine does not know the weight of the newspaper every day.
Food has got really expensive in Australia, just like everything else.

When I see the way meat is sold in local markets, laying on wooden benches covered in 30 years of blood and fly shit, I'll stick to my vegies thanks.
