A single expat lady new at Phnom Penh

Post by Fangzgreen »

Hi,

Good day everyone.
I am Susan, and as a designer, I have the job offer here at Cambodia, Phnom Penh with the good offer, so I took it with my zero experience at this country. Hoping anyone here could assist me on it, i will be thankful :)
As a single lady, I've been living at several countries before I will move here, yet actually, I would like to know, is it safe at Phnom Penh?
Any happening places that I can go to get to know some new expat friends? :)
Currently, I also looking for nice area to stay, and easier to go everywhere, like market, movie? (my employer will provide me the apartment - but i need to know the area)

Thank you,
Susan

I know, I know, I shouldn't ask. How old are you? What language is your #1, as it may help track down some people you don't have to speak to through google translate. Do you drink?

Welcome to Cambodia and to CEO!

Safe? Hmmmm.... Many expats, myself included, consider it to be as safe as back home, some say safer.

If you walk around with your handbag and cellphone hanging out, a good chance it will get snatched.

You could get robbed when up at no-good-o'clock leaving the bars, but statistically it's rare.

What area will you be working in?

It's a very small city, so you'll usually be no further than 15 mins from anything.

Welcome! I'm local person. Yes, Phnom Penh is safe for everyone but like GM mention above what you should be careful. Don't walk alone at night.
One more thing is with the traffic, some people might not respect the traffic lights so you need to be careful when you cross the roads.
Feel free to ask us.

Hi,

Thank you for the reply all :)
I'm mid - late 20 ;)
I able to speak 4 languages, although English is not my first language, but I think I can communicate pretty well both oral and written. My first language is chinese :)
And yes, I can drink, social drinker, not really a heavy drinker.
I was living at Kuala Lumpur before on my own for 3 years before I decided to move to Cambodia end of this month, already made several friends, hanging out, etc.
So, at the new place, I should be adapt again, hoping could make some new friends, getting know the area, and the safety.
My employer place is nearby Aeon Mall or something, I went once to Phnom Penh before for a day to visit, still I am blind for sure.
So, any info which area to stay for easier to go everywhere, like market, movie, bars?
Thank you :)

No worry Cambodia is safe. I think you might have heard a lot about bad news in Cambodia, but it is not that bad. The best place to live in this small city is Toul Tom Pong. It is also close to Aeon Mall where you are working.

I think your place is the best, near bars, near cenima, near markets.

Aeon mall = live in BKK1, Russian Market, or Boeng TomPun area. I like boeng Tompun. I work around Aeon Mall area. BKK1 is hella expensive. Russian Market getting there too.
I'll give ya 500 Riel for it...

As others have said, Phnom Penh is quite safe but you do have to be careful as a single lady if going home late at night. A friend of mine had her bag snatched this weekend. Luckily her cries alerted the whole neighbourhood and the neighbours quickly came out. In a panic, the thieves dropped her bag and even had to ditch their moto and ran for their lives. So not a good night for the thieves: they lost their bike and she got all her stuff back. Unfortunately, the angry neighbours smashed the thieves' bike (I suggested she sell it off) and it was then impounded by cops... Oh well... Still, she got hurt in the process and bag snatchings happen quite often to women, so do practice common precautions and maintain situational awareness while out late at night.
