Sim card selling drive men bus from airport to hotel

Unless things have changed-

If you were roaming the streets and went to buy your SIM card from many of the phone outlets around town, it will have been registered by the person in the shop. It's normal. ធម្មតា, Thommotea (pronounced Tommodah, sort of)

Don't sweat it. When you leave quarantine, go to an actual Smart centre (I'm guessing there is one, (but I'm basing this on my Cellcard experience), and have the Phone company staff in the shop register the sim with your details. That is when you will need your passport. For now, speak nicely to the hotel staff, and they'll help you set up the sim, sell you scratch cards to add credit, show you how to convert your $1 for bucketloads of network credit, and use social media apps for communicating instead of normal phone calls.
The guy on the bus is making a huge amount of profit selling overpriced sims. It's something of an indication of how many things will done in Cambodia. It's a pain. A minor one. None of my partner's sims are registered in her name

Here's a major pain- When/if you leave Cambodia, and your sim hasn't been active on the network for a while, it will be recycled. So, if you do leave and come back, and unless you plan a quick turn, don't bother printing business cards with the number on them. The number will have been resold or at least put back into general circulation.

This is true of some staff members at some hotels, but not all hotels. I was simply told no, that staff could not assist with getting a SIM. NHAM24 refused to deliver one to the quarantine hotel.

I just think people should be prepared that if they arrive at the hotel without a SIM, they may not be able to get one for 14 days.

@Reckoning I'm curious as to which hotel you stayed at that wouldn't assist with a sim. Name and shame.

If you ask in a Smart (or another company) shop, they will sell you the package that has the longest span with no usage. I have heard some packages offer 6 months, maybe more.

I think you caught posters on a bit of a bad day (wih the honourable exception of Duran).
As you now know, you did nothing wrong - buying a sim from the driver was the only way you could be sure of getting one.
It should work perfectly well for you.
If you need a top up before you get released, you can try to get a scratchcard or a friend can top it up for you from PiPay or ABA or certain other banks.

Tianyi, of course. I called down, asked if someone could buy a SIM and first they said no, then they said OK we can send a guy to et one for $10, then they called back and said "cannot" and that was final.

When I tried to order one from nham24 th system confirmed the order but then I got a text saying we can't deliver to quarantine hotels.

I think you can keep it active by topping it up online every 60 days or so while you're away. However, just because you can top up the number doesn't mean it's still yours and still active. I spent $10 to top up a number with Smart or Cellcard, I forget the provider, only for them to later tell me by chat "that number was deactivated and recycled and is not assigned to anyone right now." I asked for my $10 back and they of course said "cannot." I had to dispute it with my credit card company to get the $10 back.

I bought years ago (2016 i think) a smart-sim-card, and it was also registered in some-one name, i knever found out later who it was, the same phone shop (in front city-centre-hotel), i asked, they didnt know her, the girl from reception who took me overthere, either had no clue who it was. I just top up every 6 months, if i am abroad, i just ask some girl in PP to top it up for 1 dollar (if she refuses, i know also how "good friend" she is, hahaha), and after 5 years (i think), its still working. Just had to go to a smart-shop and activate some "long-time" program, to confirm it only every 6 months !! ?? Works perfectly for me !!

If you're still wondering under whose name and ID your sim is registered, you can do so by dialing *567# and it will reveal that person's details.
