Sending money to Cambodia

Post by DaniHirsch »

Hi all,

I have a JTrust (formerly ANZ) bank account with few dollars in it, and I sent money to my girlfriend's ABA account several times. All good.

I am not in Cambodia anymore, and my JTrust money is running out, so I'm looking for other ways to send her money.

I also sent her through Ria to her bank account, and it also worked good (my money is in Euros though).

Which is, in your experience, the cheapest way to send money in euros to Cambodia?

On the other hand, my passport ID is going to change the next time I go to Cambodia. Do you think they will let me keep my bank account (they're changing some stuff like the credit cards, due to the ANZ-JTrust change), even if I don't have a job anymore there?

I guess this has been asked before, please feel free to redirect me to any thread digs about it.

Thanks my friends

I send money every 2 weeks and have tried several different ways, and as usual the cheapest is not always the easiest. So I have settled down to using Western Union , which is the easiest, [ not the cheapest ] knowing that this is only a temporary solution until I get back to Cambodia.

Your euros would be converted to USA $ at the time / rate when you send it, and it can be sent into her bank account or she can collect cash from any WU [ ACLEDA ] agency.

@Duncan just wondering if you've tried AUDSmart direct to a Wing account? If so, what was that like?

You may like to check out xe.com. They have no fees and will convert your Euro to USD at a more favourable rate. I checked and they do allow remittances to Cambodia.
By the way once you have opened an account in Cambodia they do not recheck your passport or visa again after opening so no need to worry about that.

Recently had a transfer with Euros to Cambodia.
Most banks in Europe ask very high costs. I opened an account with BRED bank (I have an account in Euro's and Dollars).
Transfer from Belgium to Cambodia of 7000 euro... costs were 25 euro. That is 0.3 % of the total amount... didn't find any cheaper.

My money stays on my Euro account, whenever I go to ATM I get dollars (at the day's exchange rate).

I’ve been using a foreign exchange trading account for many years, but recently needed a backup method due to all this Covid uproar. XE app on my iPhone.
Actually pretty quick when I’ve used it. I haven’t analysed how well it performs exchange wise, but seems comparable. £-Sterling into my ABA US$ account.

Don't just look at the fees, look at the exchange rate. These companies make a lot of money from the exchange rate.

As explorer says. Fees are only half of the cost.

Transferwise breakdown

Just transferred from UK to USD

Fees $25 (intra-bank)
Transferwise fee 93.63 GBP
ABA fee 0.1%
GBP/USD rate 1.25180 (slightly above the spot at the time I sent)

I checked XE too but their rate was 1.243

It was a relatively large transfer so the fees + better rate were cheaper than no fees and a slightly worse rate
