Thai's are surprised when you tell them it is rum. They all assume it is whiskey. Mixed with pineapple juice and mango juice it goes down smooth. I love the shit

In Thailand though, the price compared to beer actually encourages hard liquor consumption. Nice way to spend an afternoon, wandering around with a 7/11 big cup full of ice, coke, soda and a few shots. By the way, ever tried that Filipino "Tanduay" rum, i got to like it when I visited S-ville but haven't seen it since.
I found it to be pretty good value. Around 155baht for a 300ml bottle in 711's and generally between 60 to 90 baht in bars.

No, I haven't tried Tanduay rum, yet. But I like any company that puts pretty girls on their website :D

Thai Huot supermarket near Central Market did not have it.

I found a place selling Samai Gold Rum. It was $30. I'm not sure what spirts go for here but that seems pricey compared to what Sangom cost in Thailand. Unfortunately they didn't have any small bottles so I could at least try it.

Do you remember where that was ?

Your right, commonly known as Thai Whisky. I also have heard it referred to as Vodka as well. But it has "RUM" printed on the label.

ha, I'm not there yet. Besides Sangsom, I don't drink other spirits very often. I seem to get milder hangovers on it, compared to other spirits or beer.

I've not tried it like that. Sounds refreshing. I like it with Soda and Ice and sometimes with a dash of coke.

Samai is a sort of Cambodian craft rum from a small distillery and supposed to be quite smooth, but I've never tasted it so cannot tell you more. Imported rum is generally cheaper.

Its interesting to me when i drink and have a preference for this or that, how much of that is for the flavour and how much is the "other stuff" (forgotten the term from marketing 101 is it perceived attributes?). For example I'm quite fond of beer Laos but I'm not sure if its the cool "retro" label that I like or the taste. I like the no nonsense branding of the sangsom and the shape of the hipflasks- a nice strong bottle than survive a bit of a knock.
haha yeah cool website, wouldn't be allowed where I'm from tho tbh I just "don't get" these artificial looking women they go for in advertising in South East asia. (not that i'm asking for "normal women".
Tanduay has a nice unpretentious label too, I remember reading about the NZ guys who started "Stolen" rum- part of their motivation was that they liked rum but found the whole pirate thing a bit cheesy.
You would think that there would be a market for the Sangsom here, both with expats who have spent time next door and the way Cambodians seem to hold Thai products in high regard.

Samai Distillery’s bar opens for drinks on Thursday evenings and is a favourite among Phnom Penh’s inner-city elite.
I'm drinking an Angkor beer now, does that count me out of being an "elite"? :P

Guess I will find out if go visit the distillery on a Thursday night and the security tells me it a private function and I can't come in......

SangSom
SangSom is a rum from Thailand, distilled from sugarcane. It was introduced in November 1977 and has since become a dominant brand in the Thai spirits market. Over 70 million litres are sold in Thailand each year, achieving a market share of more than 70 percent in its category.

There's the amazon link. But I don't think you will need it, due to finding it here in the city.

I don't really drink many beers here, if say I have one or two with a meal I tend to go for Cambodia, due to it not being so sweet has other brands. Drinking beer makes me piss too much. But there was this one time! happened to be when I had the bar, was full of customers too buying me beers, just one odd occasion it was. I didn't piss for quite sometime, and I will never forget the nightmare. Bacardi I would prefer and at @$12 per bottle it's a very good buy.
Always "hope" but never "expect".
