How am I being belligerent? The link to your above article is one of many articles I have read over the years. In fact, I was the first to read what Felgerkarb posted on K440 before most media published it. When this news broke out, may overseas Khmers were filled with joy calling foreigners directly at the barangs all sort of names. I on the other hand tried to be neutral.

The Khmer govt problem-solution thinking is so lacking, just like many laws they imposed. I cant think of any developing countries or developed countries for this matter having this sort of restriction. I suppose millions of Khmer women living in this poverty stricken country will save them from harm with this law. It is not like they are forced to marry ugly bubbly dudes, most see it as an opportunity to break from the cycle of poverty. I see nothing wrong with that.

You dont honestly think the Khmer govt imposed this law because they care about their women do you?

belligerent: inclined to or exhibiting assertiveness, hostility, or combativeness

This has been typical of your posts towards Joon - what if it was her opinion - why make this statement? It happens that it was what the Khmer officials said at the time in response to what the South Korean's were doing....

So why did you go on to argue what Joon stated?

Wow - good for you - how did you manage to come up with that one - it was actually Gavinmac! And you weren't the only one reading K440 then!

Cambodia suspends foreign marriages: official

Date: April 3, 2008

Cambodia has suspended marriages between foreigners and Cambodians amid concerns over an explosion in the number of brokered unions involving poor, uneducated women, an official said Thursday.

The move follows an International Organisation for Migration (IOM) report highlighting the plight of an increasing number of Cambodian brides migrating to South Korea in marriages hastily arranged by brokers who make large profits.

Some 1,759 marriage visas were issued by South Korea in 2007, up from just 72 in 2004, the report said.

While no systematic exploitation was uncovered, several cases of abuse did raise a red flag with the government, said You Ay, secretary of state with the Women's Affairs Ministry.

"Seven women have returned from South Korea because they could not stand what happened to them there," You Ay told AFP.

"The government has temporarily suspended all (paperwork) for Cambodia women to marry foreigners," she said.

You Ay said the ban, which was approved last week, would be lifted after the government developed a legal framework to address mixed marriages.

"This suspension is to prevent human trafficking through marriage," she said, adding that while the brides often receive as little as 1,000 US US dollars, agencies can make tens of thousands of US dollars on each marriage.

"Cambodia is working to strengthen the laws on marriage," You Ay said.

IOM project coordinator John McGeoghan said that while the report targeted marriages between Cambodians and South Koreans, the potential for problems exists globally and that brokered unions needed to be better regulated.

Three South Korean marriage agencies have been closed down in Cambodia pending the government's decision on marriages to foreigners.

The South Korean embassy in Cambodia earlier this week halted issuing residency visas to Cambodian women wishing to marry Korean men.

It was merely an honest question with your assumption.

It was a genuine question, was not an attack. For your information, I live in South Korea before this law was imposed. And there were only 2 report cases about Khmer women being abused; one was from Koreanbeat.com now it affiliated with asiancorrespondent.com. Shortly later, the Korean govt restrict korean marrying overseas wives unless they met certain requirement due international criticism from the global communities. The majority of abuse came from women from VN, China and 2 more poor countries which I cant remember, but Cambodia wasnt on the list.

Read above, I simply asked was it what the officials stated or was it her opinion.

You got your fact wrong. Your choices either PM Felg himself, ask publicly or dig through Felg's posting history on this topic.

I just gave the official reason that was given for the establishment of those rules, FC.
I agree with you that the government and officials' logic is beyond silly and backwards, not just for those rules but for a number of other laws and regulations. Never said those rules and the rationale behind them were the most intelligently thought of.

By the way, I felt in no way attacked. Just saw FC's question as it is, a question.

Fair point FC - I apologise for being belligerent!

I was in Cambodia during the time when the original edict was issued - and it was a big issue - sure, from your position in Korea, it would not have been that big an issue, but from here, it was.

It's like hard and soft title for land one is recognized nationally and one is local. Someone over 50 can marry and it is not illegal and the paper work is done locally and a talk to the village head and police head and sign/finger print unknown khmer papers pay their fee. Than have a wedding with all the family, the silly costume changing, picture taking and all night circle dancing.

I thought the govt passed this law because they didn't want to see and grand-father/ grand-daughter couples. That may have been the unofficial reason, though. I thought the S Korean broker scandal was more of a catalyst then a cause.

In Cambodian logic, the grandfather/granddaughter image necessarily reflects a fake marriage. It's narrow-minded and backward thinking but it's Kingdom of Wonder. Of note, such Cambodian couples are free to get married.

I think there is not a lot of information out there about the 2 marriage laws that were enacted in April of 2011.

The $2,500 per month income thing is pretty real from what I hear. I was reading on another forum about an American guy who tried to get around that income requirement by faking his own business so he could act like he paid himself X amount of dollars ( obviously over $2500 per month). I guess the story went that he made it past some ministry ( I can't remember) and then got up the flagpole to the real people in power. He showed the fake invoices/statements and shit and the Khmer lady asked him for his United States Tax Returns for the previous year proving that he actually made this "fake" money.

I think I do remember the story being told by a poster who isn't known for his bullshitting. Dare I say it was our very own Mr. Lexus who told this account? I can't remember, but it sounded pretty plausible.

You got to love a country that protects us old farts from predatory young Cambo females and their greedy families. I wish they would have had this law in Thailand years ago as it would have saved me hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Why buy a cow when you can milk it for free (or $20. or less, then return the cow to the herd and find another one.)
