Prices - small welder, square tube steel

Post by StroppyChops »

Anyone got a recent price for those small portable welders you see stacked up in hardware shops, and for 30 and 40mm square tube steel and decent cutoff saw, please?

I assume those little stick welders have a long cycle on them - any tips? Recommendations on rod type in the tropics?

Edit: I can weld, so tutorials not required thanks

The light weight air cooled welders have a duty cycle of around 20%. Note if you go for one of these make sure it is fan cooled. Some real cheapies have no fan and are next to useless. Sorry not up with prices but from memory around $50. The Russian market is a good place to get welders, saws and other power tools both new and second hand. If you go into the market from the car park on the west (136 st) side, and take the left entrance as you face the market (next to the covered MC park). All the welders/tools are at the entrance.

Thanks Kuroneko - I'm familiar with Psaar TTP (it's our local) but wouldn't have thought to check for a cooling fan. Cheers.

Misc off the top of my head.

Last I remember they were over $100 for any kind of useful welder (chinese brand). The knobs (i.e. temp control, current, etc) are anything but precise, so it's very much a feel as you go welder. Also, the biggest limiting factor when I'd do onsite welding and such was actually the wiring in the buildings themselves. Often times I'd have difficulty keeping a decent arc going because of brownouts.

Wire fed small Makita welders are in the $400 range.

Kobe steel rods $3.50 a pack.
Stainless rods were I think $8

The Makita store on Mae Tse Tong? sells rods too of various types. More expensive by $.50 ish but price tags are displayed.

Thanks - small units (200/230) are coming in around $100-130, all pretty standard pricing. Wouldn't trust any of them to give a reliable puddle based on the controls. Saw a combined stick/wire welder, supposedly a Makita, for $230.
