Is it possible to open a bank account with an annual visa but without a rental contract?
Hello everyone, I have a question about opening a bank account in Phnom Penh, preferably at ABA Bank.
I will first apply for a one-year visa with Call Kim in June and then go to the bank to open an account. But I don't have a rental contract yet. Can I still open an account?
Thank you very much for the information.
Greetings Otto

Most banks will ask for proof of residency, so it's a 'no' unless you find a lax bank employee.yellowPoint wrote: ↑Mon Apr 01, 2024 7:12 am Hello everyone, I have a question about opening a bank account in Phnom Penh, preferably at ABA Bank.

Too bad, because it's important for me to be able to pay by QR code, among other things. What other options are there for paying by QR code without a bank account?

Do you know of an agency that has contacts with banks so that you can open a bank account relatively easily? Back then in Pattaya there was an agency that worked with a branch of Bangkok Bank. I also got a bank account like that as a tourist.

ABA's website states the following which suggests a one year Visa on its own is sufficient (though this isn't any guarantee that they won't ask for other docs)
Submit one the following documents to proof the residency status:
A Visa period of 6 months or longer, or
Many visas which are consecutively issued to the holder, with a combined visa period of not less than 6 months or 182 days, or
House rental/lease contract, certificate of residential address, hotel lease / bill indicating a tenor of not less than 6-month tenor,
Proof of employment indicating at least 6-month employment period. Proof of employment may include employment contract, certificate of employment, employee ID with photo (indicating the date of issuance to the date of account opening not less than 6 months or 182 days), or
Proof of business ownership if self-employed i.e. business license / certificate or patent

A rental contract is not the requirement. Proof of residency is the requirement - most foreigners will meet that with a rental contact.
There are other ways to satisfy this point without a rental contract, but without knowing your specific situation it's difficult to advise.

Re: Is it possible to open a bank account with an annual visa but without a rental contract?
Thank you very much for the various information on this subject. I am a pensioner, 57 years old. I am not going to work. I am only applying for an annual visa for pensioners. I currently live in Thailand and have a rental contract there. But this will be of no use to me in Cambodia.

I opened my ABA account with just my passport, which at the time had a 6-month extension of stay in it - that was important.
No further documentation was required. I did need to provide them with my residential address in Cambodia, but they took my word for it. I had saved it in my phone and showed it to the clerk, who was happy that it had all the details (district etc.). Other than that, they wanted my email address and phone number to set up the app.
Overall, a great experience and it couldn't have been easier. I've been happy with ABA ever since.

That would be a really great thing. Everything changes over time. How many years ago did you open your account?

If you meet a helpful bank staff member it can be done in minutes. If you meet a lazy one you may need to visit another bank branch and try again
Also, if you will be working: a letter from your would be employer requesting the bank to open an account so that they could pay you trumps the need for proof of address or residency
