I'm tempted to go with your white paint solution as a first try. When you say it certainly lowered the temperature, I am looking for just a few degrees, maybe 3 to 4 and my problem is solved. Do you reckon it reduced it by that much?

How about painting it white? Or lots of plants?

Both recent from the Beeb
Nice short video.

White paint under consideration now as a quick and cheap first attempt. If going with poly tiles then a good strong adhesive should keep them in place and fitted tighly together should prevent any ponds developing. As for UV degradation, that sounds a long term issue by which I mean years not months. If so I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Of Poly tiles reduces the interior temp by 4 or more degress then I will look to get a more permanent insulation structure in time.

I found the website and this:

Cool roofs in Albuquerque, New Mexico

In Albuquerque, difference in temperature between rural and city areas can reach almost 10F at night.
Climate campaigners have been advocating the use of white-coloured roofs in order to help mitigate the heat, as a traditional dark roof can reach temperatures of up to 150F, and can be up to 50F hotter than white roofs.

Donna Griffin, a member of the Sierra Club’s New Mexico chapter, changed her flat black roof to white and says the difference has been “amazing”.

There are several buildings in the city already with white roofs, but Griffin is hoping the tactic will be rolled out across the city to include residential homes, particularly those with low income tenants.

Another tactic is implementing “green roofs” – plants and gardens on top of roofs that use vegetation to help trap heat in a process called evapotranspiration.

So would a course of brick around the edge of the roof. plus some running the length, and pouring concrete, and re-bar over the top of the poly tiles.
But it's more expensive then white paint.
Always "hope" but never "expect".
