I thought that visa promotion ended years ago.

I think it might be visa free for 15 days if you arrive by air. The Ha Tien visa 15 day visa waiver ended a few years ago. It was possible to visit Phu Quoc that way, but strictly speaking you weren't supposed to go outside the Ha Tien SEZ. The rule for Australians is that they should behave like normal people and not walk around in wifebeaters talking in some weird dialect nobody else understands.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

I answered on the other forum, but here goes: Australians do not come under the 15-day visa exemption rule. Phu Quoc is visa free if you fly in, that is you cannot go via Ha Tien or Rach Gia.

It did end years ago, and was re-introduced a couple years later. As far as I know it's still valid. Lack of official announcements makes it difficult to find out details. And the new visa free rules for most nationals makes it quite moot spending further thought about it.

The more adventurous among us (who are not visa free anyhow) could try to hire a boat in Kep for a transfer straight to Phu Quoc...

Far from "most" nationalities. It applies to 9 European countries, Asean, and Japan.

12 European countries if I count right, including the largest and most populous ones, then as you say ASEAN and Japan, as well as Korea.

That should cover the majority of travelers (with the biggest gaps probably North America, China and AU/NZ).

The IATA link also clarifies Phu Quoc exeptions I just realize. 30 days visa free, even for transit flights via HCM.

I can't think what the other three countries are, AFAIK it only applies to these European countries: Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and United Kingdom. And 15 days is too short anyway, the impact was almost zero.
