Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center - is there a bus?

Post by britscienceteacher »

I want to take my boy to see lots of exotic wild animals. I wouldn't mind seeing a Burmese python (myself) if they've got one (don't know if they have). I found Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre in the Lonely Planet but no mention of any bus or coach there from Phenom Penh. In fact if anybody knows a bus station that serves the wider area that would be great. Tourist information has all this info, right? But I don't know where that is either. Grateful for any responses.

Thanks

James

Phnom Tamao is a great place and certainly worth a visit. It's about 35 km south of the city on NR 2 so there would be buses going down that direction but then the small dusty road that leads to it is more than 4 km long and lined with desperate folk. The center itself is spread over a very large area and there were very few useful signs or maps around any time I visited so it's easy to get lost or miss stuff. The enclosures are huge too so often the animals aren't always visible, but that's one thing I like about the place. I'd advise just hiring a car and driver from Phnom Penh for the whole trip, but if you check out some of the tours being offered by guesthouses etc you might find a slightly cheaper way to do it (but in a group). Or get the local bus to the turn off and get a moto/ tuk tuk from there if there are any. I wouldn't advise taking a tuk-tuk all the way from the city, the road gets a bit hairy for slow stuff. Anyway enjoy the trip,

Thanks John, I have found National Road 2 (NR2) on the map. It carries on South from Norodom Blvd. That sounds like a good plan to get a bus to Phnom Tamao (that's the name of a town, right) and then tuk tuk it to the place. The only question I have now is where the bus stop is (Phnom Tamao is 40km away - long-distance and I don't know how often those kinds of buses stop on the way - so waiting on NR2 might not be a good idea) or a bus station in the Phenom Penh that goes to the town where it leaves from, and the number?

Take the backdoor from NR3 if you're feeling adventurous and want to skip the long stretch of beggars. Coming from the other side you have a shitty road that will scrape the car with vegetation reaching for your windows. The locals give an interesting look of confusion when you enter the site flying out from the jungle over a pile of rubbish. I have video of driving through that mess somewhere. I felt like Rambo.

There's no town there, you'd have to ask someone on the bus where to get off, and I'm not sure there would even be any tuk tuk around, maybe just a moto? I've never taken a bus there but it would be the one that goes to Takeo City.

Post by britscienceteacher »

Traveling to Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center by bus - what's the number and where's it leave from?

Any reply to this question is much appreciated.

Thanks

Lazy Gecko used to run a jeep tour out there regularly, when Ash and Barb had it. Not sure if it's still on offer there or elsewhere. I think it was pretty good as you got a " backstage pass " with them and got to wash the elephants or whatever.

Bus number and stop

Post by britscienceteacher »

That's a lovely story but I just want to get there so I need a bus number. Elephants are nice but I'm not so keen on the trolls.

Are you suggesting that I'm trolling?
If so, I apologise for providing information I thought relevant.
If not, what trolls?
