Phnom Penh Accommodations & Commute Question
Re: Phnom Penh Accommodations & Commute Question
Without knowing anything about you or your budget and assuming you have $1000/month.
Do not go through the hassle of getting an apartment for 2 months. Just don't bother.
Find a guest house slightly north of Central Market area. It is an area that will have everything you'll need and is walking distance to riverside/tourists/expats. Try one out for a few days, keep doing that until you find one you like and then go for a discounted rate for the rest of your time. This area will also make it convenient for you to take a Motodop to and from work everyday up Russian Boulevard. Same thing try a few motodop guys out. When you find one you like and you've taken him a few times. Negotiate a deal and tell him to drive you there and pick you up at certain time everyday for a flat rate. (That ride $40/month negotiated up from $30 paid at the end of the month). If you have money and you're feeling nice, you're better off getting him food to eat on the sly and giving him hand jobs instead of overinflating the economy by giving him more money.
Anyways, Cambodia will most likely be hard for you if you're interning, so take my advice it will make it the most economic and convenient for you.

Good advice from Gen Mac and JackRoad, although I don't understand the last part about food and hand jobs. Most of these guesthouses are not on the internet, or the info is so confusing/incorrect, that you really need to be here to find a good one. Do you know anyone here who can help you? Someone to find a possible good place to stay before you arrive, and give you a quick lay of the land while you get yourself sorted? That would be a good idea.

Not really, Tuol Kork is west of the central area, but the area usually referred to is north of Russian Boulevard. You can see the districts on this map:dastardlyduck wrote: I saw somewhere that Toul Kork stretches pretty broadly from North to South so I thought it might be the neighborhood closest to where I'll be working.

The motodops will probably try and get $3 + a trip out of you every time if you go from Monivong Boulevard out to the airport along Russian Av. That will add up. Try Lucky Lucky Motorbike rental near Oru sey market further up Monivong Boul. to stop all the motodop / tuk tuk hassles. If you can ride a motorbike it will be pretty easy to adjust. I think they are about $5 p day and cheaper on a months rental. 180 vision and finger on the horn...
I don't envy the commute if you need to travel in rush hour up that road. Also lots of cops on the make along there. Wear a helmet and make sure your lights aren't on in the day and you should be OK.
It would be 7-8 Klm from your work into town. There will be plenty of places to stay out there, as well as in town (also in between) so you will have a choice of which way round you want to do it. Guest house range from $5-7 fan room, cold water, wi-fi, $12 -25 for AC with hot water flat screen TV and wi-fi on average, up to whatever... Should be slightly cheaper near where you work than in the center of town.
I think rush hour is around 7-8.30? am and then again at 11 am going for lunch, then coming back from lunch at around 12-1. Then the rush in the evening around 5 - 7pm. Not too sure, maybe someone can supply the accurate times? Haven't been up and out that early for a while lol.

You could also look for short term rental. Try AirBnB.
