Pets
Re: Pets
Ferrets are popular pets in Europe but illegal to own in Cambodia. There are many shops that sell illegal wildlife despite their status. I would stick to something traditional like a dog. There are too many shops selling sick animals with no care.
Re: Pets
My dogs on average last 4 years. If you plan to stay that long, you can keep one, if you're planning a shorter stay, better not. If you live alone and have to be out a lot keeping a dog is not recommended too.
Cats in the boonies are pretty wild, at least according to my experience, and I happen to be a cat lover. But in Cambodia I changed to dogs. Loyal as f*ck, better rat catchers than cats and a great snake warning.
It's sad traffic, thieves and diseases take 'm out pretty fast.

Re: Pets
I have a fish pond made from a large plant pot with about 50 little fish in it, plus a bunch of snails which I think came hidden with a pond plant I bought. I put a dozen small frogs in it and they all disappeared, apart from one I found dried out on its back. I'm not sure if the other frogs jumped off the balcony or if birds took them.
As for cats, they will catch and eat mice, but not rats. They're too big and scary.

Re: Pets
Totally a good idea! And if you are truly an animal lover, please give generously to the ongoing GoFundMe for Tally, the gorgeous Cambodian/Australian cat that recently passed away and needs a proper funeral and burial. Thank you.

Re: Pets
My in-laws have got an old dog which is almost blind, and can barely walk, but when I go on my annual visit to the srok, he remembers me and staggers over with his tail wagging for a pat on the head.
I first met that dog about 18 and a half years ago.
You need to take better care of your dogs.

Re: Pets
Maybe, consider fostering if you aren't sure how long you will be staying or if you can afford to bring a pet back with you. You get to help out and enjoy some furry company without leaving a bonded family member behind. There are all kinds of critters listed on Khmer24 birds, fish, dogs farm animals, etc. Also if anybody knows what this is it would ease my mind (dog toy or strange creature?)

Sometimes called the "bear cat", but is actually closer to civets and otters on the taxonomical tree.
Another of Cambodia's fab mammals. One of the most common and can be seen in the bush, crossing the road, in settled rural areas. Friends of mine saw one on their Mekong riverbank, just 8 k's from Phnom Penh.

4 years is an average, one lasted a week and ended under a truck.Username Taken wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2019 1:30 pmMy in-laws have got an old dog which is almost blind, and can barely walk, but when I go on my annual visit to the srok, he remembers me and staggers over with his tail wagging for a pat on the head.

Re: Pets
PS (from above). if you want to see a Binturong - best way is to get some chickens.
They basically inhabit the fox "niche" in the local ecology.
