PayPal

Post by mcam »

I have used the search function before posting this but wanted to know if anyone knew a solution to my problem.

I want to start doing some online work and recently signed up to PayPal. I'm from the UK and my bank account there is now closed. I used my Cambodian based debit card to sign up and after reading online I've found out I can't receive any payments.

Any suggestions on how to get around this? Or does anyone know of any agents who's PayPal I could use and they take a commission?

Re-open your UK bank account?

You could try an app only current account based in the UK. I don't have any experience with them but either Starling, Monzo or Atom.

Can set up via an app and all are FCA compliant.

Starling do not accept overseas tax residents but you may be OK (probably the same with the others)

Closing your UK bank account wasn't the smartest thing to do. Re-open it, transfer from your PayPal account to your UK bank account, and then you can make a SWIFT transfer to your bank account in Cambodia.

Or move to Thailand as said, banks there do offer transfers from PayPal.

Can I open bank account in Thailand without moving there? I know I can in Cambodia, but have to be there in person.

Your options are limited. You can either send the money via Paypal to someone you trust and have them withdraw to their bank account and transfer the money to you, or you can travel to Vietnam or Thailand and open a bank account but it takes about a week for your card to be issued. Also, Thailand banks can be picky and Bangkok banks needs a letter from your embassy.

Open N26 or Revolut account. You get either Latvian or German bank account depending on which service you use, and you can get your Paypal money transferred there. Opening the account is done online / in app. You need only physical address in Europe to get their card delivered. Then you can either use their credit card or move the money to Cambodian bank account.

Great tip. Didn't know this. I sign up to N26. Will save lots of bank costs and am more flexible with money. Using this and connecting it to Paypal should work.
Now only must use VPN server while being in Cambodia to keep using my europian Paypal account to revieve payments.

No need for VPN to access your PayPal account from Cambodia.

Please note once you received over a certain amount of money in your PayPal account PayPal will start asking for documentation to prevent money laundering.
