Passport and police problem.

Post by dan1el »

I have to renew my passport as I have no pages left. I have all the documents needed but the proof of residency document you have to get from the local police chief.I met the chief today and he advised me to report it lost and if I went with him today to the police station he would give me all the documents I needed to take to the British embassy and they will give me a replacement. It will cost me a $120. I said I was busy and said I would get back to him but I still don't have the proof of residency document I need. I have 5 months left on my visa so time is not on my side so my question is what would you do now? Is he just trying to get $120 out of me or do the British embassy give out replacement passports for people who lose them? I know the difference between right and wrong but it would be so much less hassle then having to send it to England and possibly have to wait 6 months to get it back and then possibly have to pay an overstay fine when I do. Any advice or opinions on what path I should take will be much appreciated.

it is just a copy of the registration your landlord files with the cops. they can get it for you.

just a communication problem it sounds like.

if you can pay your visa extension prior to sending off the PP and ask for your old passport to be returned they will swap visa onto the new PP.
overstays are $5/day.

My guess is that the police chief is trying to screw you.

I don't know about the UK, but why would you need a proof of residency document? You could be anywhere in the world and need a new passport without being a resident of wherever you are.

To renew a British passport you need a proof of address document. My landlord knows about it and sent the local police chief guy to my home and he knows about this document as I had an example copy to show him with my passport. He told me not to bother doing that and told me to report it lost or stolen even though I has just shown it to him as it would be easier for me. I don't care about having to bung him $120 if it makes my life easier and his new year happier I was just wondering if it would actually make things easier.

I'm sure Khmer New Year has an influence in this.

But, what if, when you ask your embassy to provide a replacement for your stolen passport, they still require some proof of address document?

Ya this doesn't make sense. The need of a residency letter.

Just provide the address of a family member in the UK, like for the US when you get a passport you supply your address.

Or shit just say you're on a long business trip or something. What are they going to do? Mail your passport back to Britain with you still here? It's just a procedure thing.

The British Embassy is a waste of space. It will not give you a replacement passport under any circumstances. All passport applications have to be sent to the passport office in Liverpool. And yes, if it's a renewal you have to send your current passport with the application and are left without one until the new one arrives (unless you apply from Thailand). The Embassy *can* arrange an emergency travel document good for a single trip back to the UK *if* you have reported your passport lost/stolen but they charge you for the privilege, it takes a couple of weeks and you may have to have flights booked already.

Apparently the passport office have cleared most of the backlog from last year. I know of someone who applied for and received a new UK passport here in Cambodia in only 4 weeks.

Wow that really seems like a waste of space. So advice I guess is for him to go to Thailand and have to stay awhile.
