The law actually DOES require anyone holding an ordinary visa to have a work permit and keep a work book. The law is very occasionally enforced.
Jacob, with your attitude however, I can see you coming unstuck in a big way one day. Your choice to refuse to pay various bribes, as you term them, is one day going to require you to actually obey the law as it is on the statutes and there will be fukall you can do about it when (not if) you push your luck with the wrong official. The problem in Kampot has been made worse by one 'wanna be cop' expat giving police a list of 100 odd expats that are living here. When taken to task on facebook he then forwarded the thread to police further identifying locals who are pissed off by this revenue drive.

Funnily enough the same little coward is rabidly anti weed and has been made persona non grata at a number of establishments around town for his sanctimonious bleats.

I think it would be safe to say that he will be having 'problems' in the future, as he should. I personally haven't met him but he sounds like a vicious, snivelling little cum dump that the community here can do without.

This is a legal requirement and legit employers will sort it out for you. They do some tests for the health check (take blood, touch genitals) but it is a really quick process.

The way to get a permit is begun by the employer submitting a form to the Ministry of Interior. They should be going after employers in these cases but seeking out the unemployed pensioners they can still get them on having the incorrect visa (Business visa).

Basically if you don't have one your employer is shit and you should seek a new job ASAP.

That's just nuts! Cambodia is not the greatest place to make a lot of enemies -- why would he do it?

Word is that he is ex military and trying to intergrate himself with the local police. He's also taken to grabbing peoples posts off other forums and then announcing on facebook that he has reported/forwarded them to his " friends " in goverment.

Not the way to make friends and influence people.

There is definately a groundswell of dislike rising. Just a matter of someone getting pissed off enough to go burn his house down ( which I actually heard being discussed in a bar the other night, in a semi light hearted way ). He seems to have scared the shit out of a lot of retirees here that have brought property and are worried about getting kicked out of the country for not compling with the work permit demands. The fact that they don't actually 'work ' here seems not to matter one jot. Combine that with the authorities demanding back payment depending on the amount of years you have been here (in some cases they are demanding over $1000) and you can see why people are getting upset over this issue.

Me thinks this little bush nark will not be around long, in the meantime though he is doing huge damage to the expat community here for his own glorification.
