For Christmas 1975, my father got "me" this:

No monitor, keyboard, printer, storage, etc. Added some stuff the next year. At least I learned hexadecimal, IMDOS, and how to enter programs published in Byte magazine.
I am sooooo very sorry if you can't understand or appreciate my sarcastic facetiousness.

No monitor, keyboard, printer, storage, etc.
What could you actually do with an Altair? Press a few switches and get some lights to flash?

Quite literally, just program in true machine code and watch the lights blink. Later versions introduced early Basic, and from there the developers bounced off and formed Microsoft.

Edit - and by "program" we're talking toggling the switches, no keyboard.

1970 I was programing in Pascal. I had to type the program out on a flexowriter which produced a punched tape that you fed into the computer. Invariably it didnt work and you marked the errors and then re typed the code. It used to take me about three goes! :D

Telex machines send text based messages, flexowriters produce punched code to feed into a computer.
