Open bank account as non resident?

Post by lutra »

Hey there

I plan on arriving next month in Cambodia, can I open a bank account there on a tourist visa?
How hard is it to get a certificate of residency?

Thanks !

I opened an account with ABA bank in Siem Reap without any problems at all. They took a copy of my passport which at the time had a tourist visa and all good.
So shouldn't be a problem.
Hope that helps.

Not my experience in PP. I needed a minimum 6 month visa and a lease and a residence form stamped by the Sanghat. The form from the Sanghkat must have your photo on and your name in Khmer scripot and English.
I hate ABA in PP, staff are rude, wait times are lunatic for counter service and even have to q for atm often bu the do pay interest. Acleda and Canadia i get excellent service, never wait more that 10 minutes. Acleda has exobitant fees 50 cents amonth for internet banking and 50 cents for mobile app but I am happy to pay that for speed. Serioulsy consider openeing a prasac accout instead. its like a building society but you get an atm card and 3 or 4 % interest on instant access up to 8% on annual depoit with monthly income. this is where the visa comes in. If you are resident (6month visa or more) you pay less tax on your interest. I beleive 4% if you are resident and 12% if you are not. It varies a bit according to type of account

Why is it that many members have reported ABA is very good and nearly the best bank ?
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

From personal experience, I would say its because they have the best mobile app which is free, ATMs & banks everywhere, fees are low, open hours are great if you need to go in.

It is always a pain going into the bank (aren't all banks?), but luckily once the account is set up you very rarely have to set foot back inside.

If 'everywhere' also means outside of Phnom Penh and the provincial centers ACLEDA will beat ABA with much more offices spread across the country.
