New Year in Cambodia
New Year in Cambodia
I am about to show my ignorance here so please go easy on me.
I'm planning on cycling Hanoi to Bangkok at the end of this year into 2025. My current schedule has me between Saigon and Phnom Penh over Tet (Vn Lunar New Year). I know it would be better to be in a bigger town in order to be sure of accommodation and restaurants and to avoid the drivers who have had a few beers. I could move my schedule such that I am in Saigon then as I have access to friends and free beds. I'm planning a 5 day stop in Saigon.
The alternative would be to adjust such that I am in Cambodia at the end of Jan 2025. This is based on some web research which says Cambodia NY is in April.
Is the Lunar NY recognised or celebrated in Cambodia? If so how much does the country "close down"?

Re: New Year in Cambodia
Whilst all Khmer miraculously become Chinese during the Chinese New Year, it is not a holiday. Sure, many things will be closed, but nothing like Vietnam. Better off in the Kingdom.Navrig wrote: ↑Fri Jan 26, 2024 6:07 am I am about to show my ignorance here so please go easy on me.

Re: New Year in Cambodia
Lunar new year is not a huge deal here and there aren't any official holidays for it so most places will be open.
Chinese Khmer businesses will mostly close and families will get together but it won't cause a Nationwide shutdown.
As for the chance of running into drivers who've had a few drinks, I think it's mandatory to be smashed while driving after 9pm here.

As Hanno said, make sure you get out of Vietnam before Tet. I've often been in Phnom Penh during Chinese New Year and will be there again this year, no issues whatsoever.

Tet in Vietnam is great ... flowers everywhere ... just a damn good vibe ... and traffic is a breeze.

Every mode of transport is packed to the rafters, ticket prices quadruple, popular destinations are completely overcrowded, and everything is shut down. And the flower markets are BEFORE Tet. Don't speak if you don't know what you are talking about.Fridaywithmateo wrote: ↑Fri Jan 26, 2024 11:27 am Tet in Vietnam is great ... flowers everywhere ... just a damn good vibe ... and traffic is a breeze.
