Did I? He simply called me a poo flinging ape so then I gave an example of a poo flinging ape. Why don't you read through again and see where the flaming begins.

My sister is an RN (nurse) now semi-retired. She has an intolerance to MSG and gets deathly ill if the food has a lot of it in it. The level of illness depends on the % of MSG. As a past Chef and running kitchens in restaurants I would not allow the use of MSG. If the food doesn't taste good enough, your either using sub par ingredients or need to go back to cooking school.

Admittedly my knowledge of using MSG in a professional kitchen is more than 25 years old now, and the ingredients available in Australia since then has grown exponentially. We were still talking "meat and three veg" back then, however cunningly disguised. "How would sir like his potato this evening?" was not unexpected.

However we're still struggling with nagging stomach upsets, to the point of starting a course of antibiotics a few days ago because Cambodia. A Khmer friend suggested to us that it's probably an MSG intolerance. I hadn't considered this, other than dining with an expat friend the other night who is allergic to MSG - the restaurant was fine with it and very accommodating.

Is anyone sensitive to MSG (rather than pukey allergic), and can you describe how it affects you please?

Edit: thinking it through, we don't eat out enough for this to be a major factor, but could still be a contributer.
Sounds more like Chronic Diarrhea caused by protazoa for example Giardia, but there are a host of others that can cause protracted low grade infection. Personally I have found that Tinidazole (4 x 500mg) taken as a single dose generally works for me.

Chronic Diarrhea is the third type (and thankfully the least common) of diarrhea, and is characterized by symptoms that may last for several weeks. Additional symptoms might include, abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, and/or a low-grade fever. The primary cause of chronic diarrhea is Giardiasis, a parasite. There are, however, several other organisms that may cause chronic diarrhea. Should you manifest symptoms of chronic diarrhea you should consult with a physician, especially, one who specializes in travel medicine or infectious disease. To determine a correct diagnosis and treatment for chronic diarrhea, laboratory analysis is usually necessary. If you find yourself in a remote are where medical attention is not readily available, then starting self-treatment with Metronidazole (Flagyl) or Tinidazole (Fasigyn) might be the best option until competent medical attention is available.

Most people's guts adjust to it here after a while, but it can take some time depending on what you eat. Everything I've read in any sort of of semi-objective publication says that MSG intolerance is a myth. As mentioned, the same thing is in every processed food in the West. That said, I think it's a lazy way to cook and I prefer food that has natural umami to MSG.
