Medical Insurance recommendations
Medical Insurance recommendations
My insurance is about to end and I've become lost down the rabbit hole of the interwebs while looking for a good alternative.
I know this has been discussed on here several times before, but I assume that what with coronavirus, policies and levels of cover are changing all the time, so it's always good to get the latest info. What insurance companies do you guys currently use and would you recommend them? Just looking for basic (cheap) cover for an expat whose already living abroad and that would cover the essentials, including coronavirus.
Thanks.

Not directed at you.

Re: Medical Insurance recommendations
Also, I've noticed that many medical insurance websites don't specifically mention covid unless you have several hours of your life to waste hunting through the FAQs and policy documents. Which seems strange, as I would imagine that would be the number one question people want to know when looking for health insurance.
Would I be correct to assume that unless it specifically states that it does NOT cover you for covid, you can assume that it does? Or does it work the other way around? Unless it specifically states that it DOES cover you, you can assume it doesn't?

Some exclude treatment in case of a pandemic. They are not specific about Covid.xandreu wrote: ↑Thu Jan 07, 2021 10:54 am Also, I've noticed that many medical insurance websites don't specifically mention covid unless you have several hours of your life to waste hunting through the FAQs and policy documents. If you change to another insurance all existing conditions won't be covered anymore. Look for that in small print.

Re: Medical Insurance recommendations
I went through this process a few months ago as posted here: post458094.html#p458094
Re Covid coverage: my broker said it included Covid and I couldn't see any exclusion for it in my policy conditions, however on my Membership Certificate there is the following note:
If I interpret that correctly my hospitalisation would only be covered if more than $100,000...not great but I guess many policies just exclude pandemics.
As an aside, HE said back in March last year that any foreigner expat residing here at the time would get free care at the Soviet Friendship Hospital for Covid. https://cambodianess.com/article/hun-se ... -of-charge
Does anyone know whether that still applies?

Re: Medical Insurance recommendations
It all depends on your age and nationality as to what plans you can get. Stupid brokers screwed me around twice after offering me plans I was not eligible for so gave up and remain uninsured.

Re: Medical Insurance recommendations
Its so strange that the local insurance companies do not heavily promote Covid insurances. There should be a lot of demand for it and I wonder why nobody wants to collect all those premiums.
A workaround could be to ask in the hospitals what kind of insurance they would accept in case you would be hospitalized due to Covid.

Re: Medical Insurance recommendations
Interesting point. I would guess that it no longer applies due to the compulsory forte covid cover for new arrivals. The maximum you can purchase is 3 months, I think.clutchcargo wrote:

If the big man was treating foreigner positive cases for free, why the compulsory insurance...
I can foresee a situation arriving where a foreigner tests positive 6 weeks after arriving, for whatever reason. "Oh, you only buy forte 20 days?! Sorry, cannot free. You pay."

I believe he meant free for foreigners who have remained in Cambodia since this crap started (Dec 2019?) and haven't left. Not new arrivals.FrankReynolds wrote:Interesting point. Re: Medical Insurance recommendations
And what you want covered. In patient or outpatient, repatriation or not, international cover or certain zones, basic or superior cover, low or high deductible, optical/dental, death benefits etc the list goes on.timmydownawell wrote: ↑Thu Jan 07, 2021 3:18 pm It all depends on your age and nationality as to what plans you can get.
TBH I spent countless hours scouring expat forums, websites, product disclosure statements (aka the fine print), incl both local and OS insurance companies. Honestly, if I wasn't retired with too much time on my hands it's a minefield and not too much fun I might add.
I do think a good broker can help..but.. you need to be clear on your requirements and spell it out. I personally found AG Cambodia good in this and I got the tip from @Doc67 ..yet, we ended up with different insurance companies coz we have different requirements and circumstances.
It can be a real PITA imo and whether you get help from a broker or not, it's up to you to do the research. As an example, I was looking at 1 company and found they wouldn't cover you for cancer treatment if you had at any stage in your life contracted cancer...even if it was 20 yrs ago and you have fully recovered and clear. Yet another one said that after 5 years if you have been treatment free, that's OK.
